Today we’d like to introduce you to Ciph Boogie.
Hi Ciph, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I got my start as a teenager in Canarsie, Brooklyn NY, at about 15 years old. So, at this time in my neighborhood rap was very popular, and it sprouted a lot of people in my age group to want to become rappers. for most of my adolescent life, I have always been known as a quiet, shy kid. Although I was shy and quiet, I knew I always had an opinion, thoughts, and feelings that I had inside which I wanted to express. My natural talent was writing, I remember as a little boy at my grandmother’s house, my imagination was so vivid, I could see the characters in my mind, and I would develop stories, I wrote short stories and poetry. Getting back to the original story about the music, Me and my best friend wrote out our first rap together at his grandmother’s house. What made the raps so bad is that we were writing offbeat and just writing terrible raps lol. I knew I still had something to say, so I was determined to improve and sharpen my skills. Which is something that got me to where I am today my determination.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It absolutely hasn’t been a smooth road, but what journey is? That’s what makes the end results beautiful, the beautiful struggle. But my struggles include getting rejected by a very prominent music executive in the early days of my music career after I gave them my demo and almost quitting music behind that. Losing my grandmother in 2006, and then lost my mother and my father within two months of each other in 2009 & 2010 in the middle of recording an album. Finally, I lost an entire relationship due to putting my music journey ahead of the relationship. All these struggles took a toll on me, and individually all taught me different life lessons, but again what journey is smooth? I’m grateful for the beautiful struggle.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an indie rap artist from Brooklyn, NY. What I’m known for outside of being a superstar and a world philosopher (Smiles). I’m just a very passionate creative, I believe in total expression and living a life of freedom, whatever that may look for you. I’m a free spirit who isn’t afraid to live to the fullest. What I’m most proud of is that I’m 100% myself in life and my music. What sets me apart from others is that I’m here to give my light to the world. #BrooklynStayWinning
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
As far as finding a mentor, I don’t believe there’s “finding a mentor” so to speak, I think mentor relationships are first established but then build up to be a solid foundation over time. Because think about it, respect must be had for each other’s vision as the mentor and the mentee, there really must be a genuine reason why the two come together, and the relationship has to provide value. I believe you can find a mentor by networking, but as I stated earlier you must establish the relationship and let the foundation get solid. What worked for me as far as networking goes, of course when I started out in the business, I didn’t know anyone, so my thinking was to let me get to the places where I know the movers and shakers are. It’s like what a politician does when they are running for office, they campaign in battleground states. Similar concept for artists they are attempting to be known and spread their name and get voted as the people’s champion. For the mentor piece, I was able to build on a relationship with my mentor Etcetera Carter back in 2006. Our relationship was based on the value we provided to each other. With Etcetera providing the music industry insider information as an executive and guidance through the music business, I was the mentee who respected Etcetera’s position in the game and was open to receiving the information he was presented to me as a willing learner who was interested in going to the next level in my career. If you google my track record, you can see that this worked out pretty well for me! #BrooklynStayWinning
