Today we’d like to introduce you to Malesha Taylor.
Malesha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story begins at Claremont High School where I learned that I had the talent and skills to become a professional singer. Since high school, I have had a life full of rich experiences performing on tours, festivals, theaters, concert halls, stadiums, throughout the world. I was naturally drawn to opera and have been singing it since high school and also love singing gospel, jazz and writing my own songs. I have have also recently scored music for public art installations and film.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, but it hasn’t been terribly rocky. I think the key to all things in life is balance. I strive to keep myself and my family healthy and not to overextend myself. I also work to live by my values and not engage in projects that take me away from living in my truth.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a classically-trained vocal artist. I recently received the National Black Arts Festival Horizon Award 2022 in Music. I am also the Founder of museSalon Collaborative who was the Public Art Curator in Residence with Art on the Atlanta BeltLine 2022-2023. I have several songs on streaming platforms with Atlanta Producer, Salah Ananse and we composed the music for the Praise House Project (public art installation) which is currently in residence at Emory University. This fall, I performed in an experimental Radio Opera at the 66th Biennale Festival of Contemporary Art in Venice, Italy.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes, the pandemic taught me to engage technology more as an artist. I learned that knowing how to utilize applications and software kept me working and that getting comfortable with tech opens many more doors of opportunity.
