Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiyarah Hamilton.
Hi Kiyarah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my business in the midst and very peak of COVID-19, I was defeated but also determined. This business idea is something I was pondering on throughout my freshman year at WSSU, one morning I woke up and took off with it. There were minimal beliefs in which I could start an actual business. However, I did.. exactly that. I began selling Brazilian and Malaysian bundles and wigs and started to gravitate towards hair accessories including bonnets, wraps, brushes, tint, etc. the plan was to create a whole collection. As the months started to move pass, social media began an excellent way to broadcast your business/work, I took it to my advantage. I began to do pop-up shops locally, traveling, also networking with other friends who are entrepreneurs as well specializing in the beauty industry. 2021 came around the corner and I decided it was something that needed to be added, something to get me outside of the box…
I took a lash and microblading class with Sierra Glamshop in Atlanta, GA and I completely fell in love, even though I sidetracked from the microblading, I still wanted to try lashing.. so I did. I always told myself that’s something I don’t see myself doing because it was too time-consuming and now, I am so great at them lol. I started off with learning from one of my most successful friends and then finally signed up for a class in which I learned so much from, afterwards it was a wrap… I knew I was gonna be a beast. Towards the end of the year, I got accepted into Morgan State University and received a job in the same area, I had to pick up and move an hour away. While I was so nervous and scared, I knew something good had to come out of it… I was right. So far, while living in Baltimore, I have done gained so much clientele and will continue to grow bigger and better. While I still work from home, I have bigger and better dreams to expand and become a Lil Baby Collection EMPIRE.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Maintaining a business is not for the weak, I would have to say. Balancing personal and business life can be challenging but it is all about balance. There are more obstacles that would have to be faced such as customer service, customer/client treatment + respect, policies, and boundaries. It is never easy, lol.
We’ve been impressed with THE LIL BABY COLLECTION, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
TLBC specializes in Indian and Burmese hair retail + Lash Extensions services. I am very creative with everything that I do, all packages come with love and special messages for my customers who are supporting me, a lash service is more personal one on one so my personality and attitude sets me apart, I am not the lash tech who just wants you in and out, I want you to feel better and feel beautiful before walking out of my door. I do offer sales numerous of the month, I have flash sales, a lot of clients tell me my prices are reasonable. Every lash set I create is a personalized creative lash set.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Originality is a huge thing for me, there are so many woman who do the same exact things but how you do it is the best part, how you come about your work is the MOST important part… if you’re like everyone else, how would you stand out?
