Today we’d like to introduce you to Autumn Collier.
Hi Autumn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My career started in child welfare and I really enjoyed it. I saw the severe effects of poverty, oppression, substance abuse, and mental health. After working in child welfare, transitioning into subsequent roles was very manageable. I spent seven years working in community mental health with all ages. After leaving my role as Clinical Director at a community mental health agency, I started a mental health private practice in May 2017.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think any road is necessarily smooth, and our perspective can temper the bumps. I expected there to be hiccups and mistakes along the way, and there were. However, the struggles did not feel monumental, as I viewed them as learning curves. Interestingly, I cannot identify any struggles along the way, though I’m sure they existed. Maybe it’s because I don’t view mishaps as struggles but opportunities for growth. Of course, this is easy to say in hindsight.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Well Woman is a group practice that serves adult women experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, and life transitions. We offer individual, couples, and group counseling and accept most major insurances. We are women, proudly serving women. We are diverse women of color, proudly serving diverse women of color. I am most proud of the amazing team of clinicians we have and our ability to meet the needs of the women we serve.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, and even now, I was the “voice of reason” friend. Surprise, surprise, I became a therapist! I would say I was even-keeled and a natural leader. I knew I would be an entrepreneur but did not know it would be in the mental health field. As I became older, I can recall pitching business ideas to my parents and becoming really excited at the thought of business. I think a personality trait that works in my favor as an entrepreneur is I am not a perfectionist and am okay with measured risks. Therefore, I am rarely stuck in analysis paralysis. Of course, there may have been times when I’ve jumped too soon, but you live and learn.
