Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Turpin.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began making music in high school but I only started taking at seriously after a personal loss. I needed to work hard at it in order to combat the depression. Once I had some songs that I thought could be presentable to the world I began to network around Johannesburg and was fortunate enough to land a few showcases and interviews. It’s just been full steam ahead from that point on and I’m nearing the 10-year mark.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been smooth. I started when I was 17 and obviously somebody that young is bound to stumble here and there. Certain relationships I fumbled and a growing ego were some of the biggest obstacles, but I’m grateful for those experiences too because you have to learn those lessons at some point.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a musician and vocalist. Mostly I rap and produce my own music but I’m also a member of a collective, The Charles Géne Suite. We just released our first album this year and were able to secure certain placements as independent artists that are usually reserved for people who have industry deals.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Traveling with my mother on some of her work assignments.
