Conversations with Yolanda Darnell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yolanda Darnell.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been holding a camera in my hand since I was a child, I think! I started with flowers and landscapes, as well as, my family but after my divorce, I had to start a new life with three small children in tow. So, I did what most moms do…I buckled down and figured out what my next steps would be, and photography not only helped me heal, but I found my place in the world again. I never thought that something I love could bring joy to the lives of others, but it did and so, “The Brown Eye Photography” was born.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
What road is smooth when you’re an entrepreneur? LOL, well, the struggle was getting my craft down to a science. That was the hardest but I had a lot of support from my children and friends to keep going. I studied and practiced a lot. I actually still practice because I never want to lose my edge or that spark. Photography is always changing and I want to stay on the cutting edge of that change.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am primarily a wedding photographer. I love romance and emotion. I specialize in candid shots of the day. There’s nothing better than watching a couple engage with their family and friends and each other. I’m proud of how my work seems to speak to people. They rave about the images I capture and I do my best not to miss a moment of the day. I want them to sit down, as they grow old together and look at the photos and relive those images over again. I hope it always brings them to the remembrance of why they fell in love to begin with. There’s a certain joy I have in being a part of that with them.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
LaJoy Lewis, most may know her as LaJoy Cox of LaJoy Photography but she just got married so I’m using her new name. She is not only one of my best friends, she has mentored me, covered me and supported me from the day we met. She has taught me so much about this business and how to be a great owner and sought-after photographer. I can’t thank her enough for being in my corner.
