Life & Work with DeShaun Walker

Today we’d like to introduce you to DeShaun Walker.

Hi DeShaun, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started off drawing when I was younger, it wasn’t until I was in my senior year in high school that I started thinking of pursuing my career as an artist. I enrolled at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design), after graduating and it was around my second or third year that I started painting. Now that I am done with school, I’ve been just trying to network and really put myself out there in hopes to make this a full-time job.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not always, there have been times I have questioned if what I was doing is the right thing for me, I felt like this, especially at the beginning of taking some of my painting classes. I was surrounded by all these great artists who already had a sense of self whereas I was still figuring things out. I had great people around that helped me along the way like professors and some of my colleagues, for me it was just that I had trouble applying myself because I didn’t have the faith in myself that I do have now.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Most of my work follows an abstract thought process, I never really had much interest in painting realistically but I have tremendous respect for artists who do as I understand the level of skill and how much practice it takes to be able to create the illusion of reality. I paint the things I visualize on subjects that personally relate to me, this way I can ensure my work is an honest representation of who I am as a person. I pull more toward a spiritual idea of art where I want to connect emotionally with the viewer, I want whatever emotion or feeling that is put into the painting to be cast out so that others can feel or relate to the feeling that is being communicated. I can’t really say there is anything I am most proud of in my art career thus far, I am happy and proud of myself with things but there is nothing that really stands out in my list of achievements at the moment. I don’t really try to pay attention to what sets me apart from others as everyone is unique in their own right so it would be wrong for me to compare myself to anyone, I am just enjoying the experience of being an artist.
