Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Cartee.
Cameron, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out just messing around with a few friends rapping and I was in a couple of bands as a drummer. I was always interested in the mixing side of everything so I started recording my friends. I linked with a few big named artist and started mixing their music and people just loved the sound I gave them. When I started getting serious about it, I got a few mentors to teach me the tricks of the trade and guide me.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s up and down. You really have to have a passion for music and what you do or you’ll hate every second of it. My road has been pretty smooth because of the people I’ve lined myself up with
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I think my proudest moment was working my girlfriend’s brother. Giving him his first single. He’s wanted to be a part of music for so long and is very talented. So, watching his hunger and eagerness was the best.
Were there moments when you had to struggle?
There have been times where I was working on a project that I didn’t get paid for until it was all done and then have to wait for the label to cut the check. And during that time I couldn’t do any side work because that workload consumed me. I had to find other outlets of making money. So I started making my own drum kits and selling them on my website and also mixing templates. It sucks having to ask your girlfriend to pay for dinner haha
Is there something we can do as a city to improve the outlook for professionals like you?
Definitely, everywhere you turn there is an opportunity. I’ve been just sitting in the studio waiting on clients and a major artist would randomly ask me to come record them because something happened with their engineer. I’m currently working at 5 different studios while being a personal engineer to 6 major artists. That really wouldn’t happen in any other city I wouldn’t think.
