Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Mosley.
Hi Sam, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
“Find what you love and let it kill you.” Charles Bukowski.
Music has been my purpose ever since I was two years old. I would bounce my head off my pillow and just make noises until I passed out. As time went on, baby noises turned into words, and then eventually sentences, ideas, and believe it or not full songs. I would sing my older brother to sleep almost every night for years. As long as I can remember when I woke up, I was always singing something inside my head and at times out loud when I was alone.
I traded a brown Abercrombie & Fitch hoody for my very first Fender acoustic guitar when I was 14. From then on, I couldn’t stop. I never learned any cover songs I just put my fingers on the strings and figured it out. I then began writing songs, getting my very first poem (song) published in my junior year in high school. Set Fire To Synapse is the title. Throughout high school, me and two other friends started a “band.” We were a nameless basement band fueled by drugs, alcohol and teenage life and we worked on songs I wrote. That’s about as far as it went.
I kept playing guitar and writing as life zoomed forward. All I ever wanted was a band and to “make it,” as the saying goes. I’ve wrote over 100 songs and I’m still writing. The world doesn’t owe me anything, I just have things to say. In December of 2020, I sent a demo to a record and distribution label called AOIR DISTRIBUTION. Thus Mosley Around was born. We released my debut EP album, titled “Naked,” June 4th, 2021 on all streaming platforms. Lyle Reed played guitar with me who was the bass player to our basement band back in our teens. He ended up buying the house he grew up in which was where we played years and years before…
After releasing the EP Lyle left the band. I’m currently recording a full acoustic album titled “Knucklehead,” and hoping to be finished very soon to release in September of 2022. From here I’m just writing my history and I’m excited to get this album out. I always doubted my talents and was never easy on myself. It took me 15 years to get this finally going. I’m just beyond excited to get my music out and across the world and I’m looking forward to my future.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road was not smooth. In the music industry, the road is unpredictable and never smooth until we pave it ourselves. My struggles stemmed from several factors. Losing the band that didn’t have a name was heartbreaking to say the least. We truly had a musical connection where we played together and didn’t even speak we just played as if we had been playing with each other for over 50 years. During this time, I felt inadequate and was close to giving it up thinking it was just a pipe dream.
Turns out this dream I’ve been chasing is becoming a reality and I won’t stop writing and playing until it kills me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a musician, writer, singer, songwriter, lyricist, poet, and somewhat of a photographer. I have been writing songs and playing guitar for almost 16 years now. I specialize in the use of words and my lyrics will atone to that statement. When I’m writing songs, it’s the only time I’m truly at peace.
As I walk through life, each step takes me further to the end. Bringing me to my next point. I didn’t want to grow old and become bitter because I didn’t try to pursue what I thought of as a pipe dream. That being said I am proud I have started that process. This “pipe dream” doesn’t seem like a hallucination after all. In fact, it seems achievable. I didn’t write over 100 songs for shits and giggles. It has to mean something and it’s the reason I was put here on earth. The world owes me nothing, but I have things to say. I am proud that I have started something that I will never stop until my soul leaves my body. I am proud of my progressive action to pursue my dream and make it a reality.
I am known for hundreds of things, I guess depending on who you talk to and their opinions of me. If I were to single it out into a specific trait, it would be me always managing to make people around me laugh.
Nothing sets me apart from others. That would suggest I am perfect. What makes me different then others is the way I play and the lyrics I write and sing. Ever since I was two years old music was instilled into my existence as of a heavenly entity deposited a magical talent into my mind, body and soul. I used to bonk my head in my pillow muttering guttural tones until I fell asleep. As I grew older I started forming my thoughts into words, my words into sentences. By the time I was seven, I was singing entire songs just off the top of my head. I even made sound effects for a guitar or whatever it was I imagined. Every morning I wake up and I’m always singing something or hearing music in my head. I never asked for this. I never asked for this burning desire to create music and I will never let this desire instilled in me go. It’s my purpose like I’ve said before and I can’t even begin to describe the amount of gratitude I have for me being me.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
