Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandi Khonouta.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been into beauty. While growing up, I would always play with my mom’s makeup. As I got older, I would do my family and friends’ makeup and that’s when I knew this was my passion, to bring out the beauty in others. I enjoyed seeing their reactions when I was done. It’s a great feeling knowing I helped someone boost their confidence and enhanced their beauty. It’s art to me. Lashes is not only a part of makeup but it’s also art. All you need is a full set of lashes and your beauty is instantly enhanced. When I got my lashes done for the first time, I fell in love. I didn’t need to put on any makeup with the full set of lash. I felt more confident. I knew this was something I would love to do for others. We are all gorgeous but most of us depend on makeup to feel empowered. I wanted to help women boost their confidence by just waking up feeling beautiful. I decided to get certified in January 2022. I was unsure of it at first but I stepped out on faith. I was scared to open my own business in the lashing industry because theirs so many other amazing lash artists. Not only that, I knew I would be making a lot of sacrifices. I overcame all the challenges and obstacles and I’m excited for this journey ahead of me. My clients are so loyal and amazing. The support from them and my family keeps me pushing forward. My one-year anniversary is approaching and I’m truly grateful for it all. It’s exciting to look back and see how far I’ve come and where I’m heading.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth ride. Some months I would have one or two clients a week and some months I would be fully booked. The beginning of my journey was the hardest. I struggled with building my clientele, thinking I would automatically get clients from just word of mouth. That was not the case. I knew I had to spend money in order to make money and that’s when I really started building my business. I paid for ads and created flyers. Some months I wouldn’t have the money to promote myself but as soon as I got one client, it most definitely went back into my business. I also struggled with retention. Lashing is not only art but it’s also science and science was never my forte. Your lash studio has to be at a certain humidity level and temperature for the glue to stick. Your speed also has to match the glue. I went through so many different glues and brands to find the perfect fit for me. It was not easy. I’ve learned through all of my struggles and overcame them. It’s been a steady ride since.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a certified lash artist. I enhance the beauty of others. My work has been speaking for itself. I’m known for giving my clients a more natural look. However, if they want to go with a more dramatic look, we can do that as well! Most of my clients choose my iconic freestyle set. It’s a whispy volume set that allows me to truly create art. I enjoy seeing their reactions when I’m finished. I also provide late-evening appointments. I understand some of us are busy during the day so I have late-night hours for those with a busy lifestyle. I don’t like to rush while lashing either. I take my time with each of my customers to ensure their lashes turn out perfect and not clumped together. I see myself doing more than just lashing in the future. My determination of seeing my bigger picture pushes me through all of the obstacles and challenges I face today. I want the world to know I am my own brand. It’s a judge-free zone as soon as you enter my lash studio and I want my clients leaving happy and more confident in themselves.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Beauty changes all the time to keep up with the newest trend. With lashes, we’ve gone from classics to volumes, to adding color and now adding charms, glitter and diamonds. I see the lashing industry evolving. I know there will be a continuous update in styles and I see myself teaching those different styles. I would love to train those who want to start a career in the lashing industry.
