Meet Mulan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mulan.

Hi Mulan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was working full-time at Aldi AND Family Dollar for about 50-60ish hours a week. I felt overworked, unfulfilled, and purposeless and on top of it, I knew I wasn’t utilizing my creativity and talent that was natural to me so in reality I was suppressing myself and I knew it! I hadn’t modeled or even considered it growing up, but more and more I kept hearing, “you should model” “are you a model?” and getting that energy from people. So much to where it became a sort of calling and I began seeing how I was choosing to ignore that calling. I always thought to myself, “you’ve never done this before, but what’s the worst that could happen? Getting told no?” That’s nothing! So I took the full dive and quit both my full-time jobs to start my modeling journey and haven’t looked back since!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road has certainly not been smooth, well at least not in the beginning. I’d say over time as I’m establishing myself and increasing my value that the road has gotten less rough for sure and that I can look forward to it becoming smoother in the future! When I first became freelance, it was difficult for me to branch out and get my own work or find consistency with it, but after I started navigating the business more and really invested in myself that’s when things started getting more smoother.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a freelance model that specializes in a plethora of categories and areas of modeling which include: fit, fitness, editorial, promotional, parts (hands, hair, skin, and nails), high fashion, catalogue, glamour, print, petite, swim/lingerie, acting (voice-over, music videos, commercials), and less-so-but-not-obsolete-to runway (due to that market still having outdated model requirements/policies i.e. height/weight /no tattoos or piercings/wanting thin body types). Mostly I’m known for my unique look/style and my animated personality (which definitely includes my expressions!) but I know the biggest thing I exude is my impressionability and I feel like that’s the largest part of my allure, but also my uniqueness and that’s really what sets me apart from others the most (so does my professionalism!). The increasing confidence in myself that I’ve gained from this journey in the pursuit of my craft and finding my purpose in life are what I’m most proud of from all of this.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Always attend any events/castings that you’re able to attend! There’s ALWAYS networking to be done at them and you’re meeting a plethora of other Creatives that are either doing what you’re doing or knows someone that does. You don’t have to seek out a mentor because you can learn to be your own. You are your biggest fan or should be at least and that means you have to hype yourself the most. That means you GOTTA market yourself and promote, promote, PROMOTE! People won’t see you if you don’t put yourself out there to be seen. Make your work lead to more work (that post from one well-marketed shoot should grab someone else’s attention enough to generate another gig/shoot with someone else). SUPPORT YOUR FELLOW ARTISTS!!! I CANNOT stress enough the importance of supporting other Creatives and businesses and branching out to collaborate and work with others! Money doesn’t determine work, but you do always have to ensure everyone involved is benefitting in some way! Don’t dampen yourself or your craft for anyone for any reason!
