Check Out Katelyn Lusk’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelyn Lusk.

Hi Katelyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got my first camera for Christmas when I was 17 years old. For a while, I didn’t use it for anything other than fun pictures with my friends and random nature photos. In 2019, my friend/coworker asked me to shoot her wedding (yes, my first ever shoot was a wedding, it was NERVE-RACKING) so I did it and absolutely fell in love with the art of photography. After that wedding, my mom helped me set up backdrops in our basement so I could do mini-sessions for holidays. Eventually, it blossomed into doing full-on sessions at beautiful outdoor locations. I did family sessions, engagement sessions, maternity sessions, seniors, everything you can think of. It wasn’t long until I realized my passion lies in couples and weddings. I still do families and maternity here and there but there is nothing like capturing that love that recently engaged or newly married couples have for each other.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It was definitely not a smooth road, especially starting out. I didn’t have a mentor or anyone to teach me the ‘ins and outs’ of photography, so I taught myself everything. It required tons of research to figure out how to use the basic features on my camera and how to adjust settings, what the perfect time of day to shoot is, how to pose people, how to edit, etc. I changed my editing style probably 5 times just to figure out what I liked and didn’t like. I’ve also struggled with imposter syndrome many times throughout my photography adventure, but I kept pushing through because this is my passion and what I love to do. No matter how hard I may be on myself, I just have to remind myself that I pushed from the very beginning to get to where I am today, and I have all of my amazing clients who have stuck with me through thick and thin to thank as well.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in wedding and elopement photography, but I still love to dabble in most of the other areas. While weddings are what I love most, I still have loads of fun shooting seniors, maternity, families, and regular portraits here and there. I’m known for my rustic style, and I think that is what sets me apart from other photographers along with my personality. Clients always tell me that they gain a friend after their session with me, and I feel the same about them. I adore all of my clients and absolutely love making new friends while doing the thing I love.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I feel that my bubbly personality has been a very important part of my success. I am a people person and I think that is a very important trait for a photographer to have. When it comes to weddings, not only am I capturing all the details of someone’s big day, but I’m following the couple around all day. Not only do I feel that it is important for us to get along, I also think it is important for the couple and I to be able to be friends. It adds to the experience and makes the photo part (what some people dread) more fun! I always try to meet with brides and grooms before their wedding so we can each get a feel for each other’s personalities before I’m the couple’s shadow for the big day.
