Check Out JJ Williamson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to JJ Williamson.

Hi JJ, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I come from a family of music, so I’ve been exposed to it all my life. I did music all through school and took it all the way to college.

Once I graduated, I worked in Birmingham, then Nashville, and back home to Atlanta.

Coming back home meant I had to start from less than 0, but I knew it would be worth it. I’ve been working my ass off singing and playing everywhere I can for the past 4 or so years now.

It’s been a process, but I’m glad I’m where I am and that I only have further to go.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth? To put it succinctly, No. *laughs*

I was doing open mics all over town. It took me forever to get into actually being booked for things.

Even then, there’s still developing your sound, finding your confidence, learning how to use your gear, recording music, booking musicians, releasing music (online) properly, generating buzz, and promoting your own music-

I could go on. It’s a learning process for sure. I’m learning new things every day.

It is the committing to the idea of “failing forward” that helped me with all of these things I had to learn about the hard way.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an artist first, professional musician second. I’m a songwriter, guitarist, producer, and singer. I play shows with my acoustic guitar and loop pedal all over Atlanta and I travel on the weekends with the group Young Hearts, as well as other bands on occasion, and I sing for events and the such. I stay busy and make my living doing music. I think what sets me apart from other people doing what I do is… yeah. I can provide the entire musical scope and experience with what talents I do have.

I write my music. I produce my music. I perform my music. I’ve even done my own album artwork.

By having the ability to control all of those variables, I’m able to provide a more cohesive and expressive painting of whatever it is in my head I’m trying to get out and into the heart of the listener.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I got to sing for President Barack Obama’s 2nd inauguration when I was in college. Probably one of the coolest things I’ve ever done.

It’s a helluva thing to put on a resume if nothing else! *laughs*
