Today we’d like to introduce you to Niquay Sutherland.
Hi Niquay, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a child, life wasn’t easy, somehow finding interest in mini peaks of happiness seemed to do the trick.
I started collecting rocks as long as I could remember; from the pebbles outside of Olive Garden to digging up shiny Mika rocks out of Georgia’s red dirt.
I have always found it beautiful that rocks and crystals were below us before my existence and will be hereafter. I started doing research that never stopped my grandma would take me to gem&mineral shows from the age of seven.
As life moved on so did my passion. I started working, left home at a young age and began to enter survival mode at times working three jobs to make ends meet. Life just wasn’t easy for me.
Fast forward years later, I became a mom to a beautiful baby boy. I knew that I needed to find my passion again. It wasn’t until COVID hit that everything clicked. I lost everything job, insurance, and fought to survive with depression.
I remember going outside one day laying in the grass looking up at the sky for about an hour. Praying to find my purpose.
I turned my head to the left and picked up the shiniest most gorgeous white quartz as if it was waiting for me. I inspected the rock my son was so fascinated and asked maybe a thousand questions about this dumb shiny rock when it hit me.
I wasn’t in love with the rock; I was in love with healing. “Healing is my passion”, this very thought sparked a bucket of curiosity. One idea led to another and Black is Bliss was born. I started selling boxes of gemstones and sage.
The same love and research that went into rock collecting is the same attentiveness that goes into my business each and every item sold is handled and hand-picked with love. I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Lack of funding – it was extremely difficult starting my company on a server salary during COVID.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Black is Bliss LLC is a healing and metaphysical shop. We specialize in providing sage, gemstones, jewelry and more. I am proud of each and every handcrafted and unique item that is sold. I am a big believer in quality and care. I always go above and beyond for Bliss supporters a great deal of research and thought goes into every Bliss Box sold.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
The aspect that I love the most about living in Atlanta is the soul of this city. Thousands of people can move to Atlanta a day, but nobody can change or alter the roots and the culture that make our city’s heartbeat. I would have to say that the worst part of Atlanta is the traffic.
