Meet Narges Naghipouraghdam of Van Michael Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Narges Naghipouraghdam.

Narges, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hi, my name is Narges and I’m 28 years old. I’m originally from Iran, Tehran, and moved to Georgia, Atlanta over 6 years ago. Growing up had a desire and passion for hair but my family didn’t want me to follow it as a career.

After finishing high school back home studied business management for a year but knew this wasn’t for me, so I dropped out of college and told my family that I want to move out of the country. That day my mom didn’t talk to me for days! The dream of living in another country was with me since I was a kid and mostly because of my dad. He used to put me and my sister in extra English classes. Just looking at the picture of another country, different people with different style made me wanna be there as well.

I was 19 when me and my sister moved out of the country and went to Turkey to start our paper works.we lived there for over 2 years and went to a couple of interviews with UN and USA embassy, finally, we got the Visa. On June 30, 2011, our flight landed in Atlanta. If I say the moment I walked out of the airport and fell in love with the city, I lied!

The first year was the most challenging since was trying to get used to this new big and busy city… My very first job was as at a retail store and at the same time, I was taking some English courses at a small college. After a couple of months, I knew I had to make up my mind for collages.since my family wasn’t here with me I decided to do what I always wanted to do: go to a hair school. So I stopped going to English classes, start serving in a restaurant, had two jobs for a while and tried to save enough money to buy my car cuz we all know you are pretty much crippled without a car in Atlanta.

I got enrolled in Toni&guys hairdressing academy. I was going to school in morning and working at night at the restaurant. After graduating and getting my license, went through interviews with different salon, and finally got hired where I wanted to be the most, Van Michael salon. Started in sandy spring location but got moved to Buckhead location after 2 months. And had a pleasure assisting director of hair color education for Van Michael, Natalie Curly.

I worked with Natalie for about a year and it was the most inspiring year of my life, everything I know today it’s because of her, I was so proud to be with her. After finishing classes at the vanmichael program got moved up to start as New Talent colorist In sandy spring location. After a year went back to classes to become an educator. I got promoted to vanmichael colorist floor and still working at sandy spring location.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s never been. The difference in culture was a huge challenge for me since I was trying to get better at doing hair as well as was and still trying to learn the culture, people and language. Every single day I learn something new about here.
