Today we’d like to introduce you to Omar Kinnebrew.
Omar, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began selling men’s accessories in 2014 stemming from the invention of my pocket square holder. Early on in the journey I taught myself how to use a sewing machine via YouTube videos and made all of the holders on my own. After sales picked up a bit I decided to run a Kickstarter campaign for more funding. Once that successful round was completed, I found a factory to produce the holders which helped gain some momentum for the business. I decided to create the O.S.K. Styles brand (selfishly named after myself) so that the holders and other accessories had a label to nest under.
After some success selling my holders on eBay, Etsy, Amazon, and through boutique retailers; I knew I wanted to add something more to the mix. So in 2016, I leveraged my relationships with master-tailors and developed partnerships that allowed me to transition from the consumer over to the provider of custom-made garments. From there, the mission was simple; create an offering that delivers high end, tailor-made pieces for every aspect of my client’s lives. They can commission formal attire, business wear, and casual items for any and every occasion. This has allowed me to attract both men and women, locally and across the globe.
Has it been a smooth road?
Although I was working to build my business while working a corporate job, the true struggle came with venturing out as a full-time entrepreneur. When I had a job, there was always a predetermined direction and a paycheck coming into the house. As soon as I set out on my own, the certainty, stability, and routine all went out the window.
There is certainly the beauty of setting your own schedule and having the flexibility to do as you please… but keep in mind, if your business does not make money, you don’t eat. Your family doesn’t eat. It’s as simple as that, so you have to ensure that your time is used wisely and that you have effective procedures for marketing, sales, and consumer engagement.
There are still smaller pieces that are constantly on the radar, such as price tweaks, additional services, website updates, branding, and so much more. This, of course, is all done by the entrepreneur, until there’s enough capital to hire the right resources.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
