Check Out Amina Garrett-Scott’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amina Garrett-Scott.

Hi Amina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been an artist in one way or another for most of my life. As I child and teenager I sketched, I crafted, painted and I even played instruments. I loved playing “dress-up” with my sister and experimenting with fun clothes, jewelry and makeup. My mom would take us to art museums and I would get lost in all of the beautiful artwork. I fantasized about having a glamorous career as a fashion designer. Years later as an adult and working Hair & Makeup artist, I find myself still very much in love with all things artistic and I even have creative, art-loving kids of my own. If my mother were still alive today, she would say that she always saw that spark in me and that she knew I would be an Artist from very early on to which I would say, ‘You were right Mom”.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing is a smooth road! I think that challenges come with any new goal that you set for yourself- they’re just a part of the package. I’ve learned to appreciate challenges because as humans, we basically can’t grow or improve without them! For me- the biggest challenge that I have faced on my journey (and sometimes still do) is self-doubt. I do also think that we all naturally have doubts about ourselves from time to time- so I’m learning not to let those fears control me or let them keep me stuck in my comfort zone. Learning to trust myself, trust the process and trust that the Universe has my back- even when things seem tough or uncertain has been the greatest positive factor that pushes me forward when things get tough.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Apart from being a SPECTACULAR Hair & Makeup artist 😉, the skill set that sets me apart from others and what I am the most proud of is my ability to listen. As Hair Stylists and Makeup Artists- we often are not known for our listening skills. We get people in our chairs and then we do whatever the heck we want to do. This seems a little strange to me because there’s absolutely no other business that you can get away with having that kind of attitude. We are all in the business of listening to our customers and clients first – then we use our talents to help them achieve the look that they want. I lead with active listening skills as a main component of any service that I am providing, whether it’s a cut & color, hair extensions or a full face of makeup.

How do you think about happiness?
1. Spending time with my family (including my cat..) because I love them!
2. Reading and learning because I can feel myself growing and improving…
3. Drinking coffee because…. Duh it’s coffee!!!
4. Working because I absolutely love what I do.
5. Being at the beach, because it’s my happy place!
