Today we’d like to introduce you to Jelaminah Lanier.
Hi Jelaminah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my brand, Normal Culture, after being a fan favorite and cast member of Bad Girls Club Season 14. I wanted to create a way for my fans to grow and evolve with me over the years. Over the years, I tried many different things with my company and finally taught myself how to sew in 2019. That was the game changer for me. I knew that I loved clothes, fashion of all sorts and traveling. My brand was the perfect way for me to fuse all of those things together to create organic pieces and content that people would love. Fast forward to 2022, I did my largest fashion show to date for Miami Swim Week which landed me a placement in the top 10 highlights for Miami Swim Week fashion shows 2022.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been an easy journey. Being an entrepreneur and being in an industry that isn’t familiar to your family background can be a struggle. I didn’t have anyone around me that was doing or had done anything to the magnitude that I was attempting to accomplish. I had to learn everything from scratch and through trial and error. I also come from very humble beginnings, so raising capital to invest in my brand was one of the biggest challenges I faced. When I decided to relaunch my brand July of 2020, we were in the thick of the pandemic and the world as we knew it was changing. It forced me to be more patient and innovative with everything that I was doing.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Normal Culture?
Normal Culture was created in 2016. We specialize in clothing for tall women. All of our ready to wear pieces are made in various shades of white as a standard. We offer supplementary colors from time to time, depending on the demand of the collection. We are also widely known and recognized for our jaw-dropping/envelope-pushing swimwear. We are most proud of being featured in Forbes Magazine. It was a huge accomplishment that we were not expecting l, but are definitely appreciative of. I want everyone to know that we are here to “Create The New Norm” and to give individuals the confidence to be as sexy as they would like to be. We encourage everyone to express themselves visually and artistically through clothing.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love everything about being from Atlanta. It’s one of the greatest cities for black entrepreneurs.
