Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorenzo Lewis. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Lorenzo Lewis is a serial entrepreneur, author, and mental health advocate with a decade of behavioral health experience who strives to better the Black community by reducing the stigma around mental health and increasing access to mental health resources.
Lorenzo has founded 10 businesses/organizations that are on the ground working to impact communities. Lorenzo participates in multiple speaking engagements a year, partners with organizations for industry research, acts as The Confess Project’s national spokesperson by communicating with the media regularly, attends barber training events, and plans community give-back events. Through this work, Lorenzo establishes himself as a thought leader across the mental health industry.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Lorenzo was born in prison to an incarcerated mother and struggled with depression and anxiety throughout most of his upbringing. Being raised in his aunt’s hair salon, he found that the Black hair salon is a safe space where we can talk about anything unapologetically. After nearly entering the system of mass incarceration himself, Lorenzo was inspired to found The Confess Project of America, Inc., turned his life around, and started to be the change he wanted to see in his community.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Lorenzo is a mental health speaker and social entrepreneur with over a decade of experience. With the ultimate goal of prosperity for the community he serves, Lorenzo now trains business professionals in workplace settings on mental health and diversity. This includes wellness tips for diverse employees and how human resources can better support LGBTQ, people of color, people with disabilities, and more. He has given training at Snapchat, Gillette, Google, and Texas Rangers to name a few.
Looking back at all of his success, Lorenzo is most proud of his mental health work in the Black community. Since May 2016, he has empowered thousands of diverse individuals across the country to embrace mental health and joy in their daily lives.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
A big supporter of Lorenzo throughout his youth was his aunt. He spent a significant amount of time in his aunt’s hair salon where Lorenzo felt comfortable opening up about his personal mental health struggles. This experience inspired Lorenzo to create one of his most successful businesses to date The Confess Project of America. This is a national organization supporting local chapters that train barbers and stylists to become mental health advocates, with the mission to build awareness and break stigmas around mental health within the Black community. This grassroots movement helped kickstart Lorenzo’s entrepreneurial career and has had a big impact on the Black community.
