Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Klimkoski.
Hi Alex, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for videography and photography. I was able to explore that passion a lot when I studied Media Production during my time in high school at Howell Cheney Technical High School in Manchester, Connecticut. After that, I studied film and broadcast journalism for two years at Emerson College in Boston. During my time there, I realized I wanted to start my own business. I left Emerson, went back to Connecticut, got a day job and tried to pursue my dream. One day I was offered a photography gig for a local theater group in Hartford. I took that opportunity to quit my day job and use it as a stepping stone to build my business. Since then, I have done weddings for multiple families, music videos for multiple local artists, concert and dance performances, portraits and travel photography. I am now blessed to be working full time owning my own business, and traveling doing what I love.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Owning your own business and building a brand always comes with struggles. Income is always fluctuating and never guaranteed, and there is no security of that 9-5 life. The video/photo production industry is incredibly competitive and ever-changing. So, keeping up with equipment standards, style trends and securing clients is a constant battle. I gave up my day job with benefits and security to pursue a low-paying photography job that would only span three weeks. I faced backlash from family for leaving college early. I had to save more and spend less. I spent time doing odd-end jobs like walking dogs and working overnights a couple of nights a week while traveling to New York and Massachusetts during days and off nights to record videos. I spent a lot of time doing free and low-cost shoots in order to get my work exposed and out there because in the production world, the only way to justify prices is by showing work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
KLIMKO Productions is a video/photography production company owned by me, Alex Klimkoski. My absolute passion has always been to create content through photography and videography. I specialize in weddings, portraits, music videos, concert/performance videography and photography, and also do some travel landscape/location photography. I find what sets me apart from others is my desire and ability to tell a story whether that’s through an image or a video. My goal is to bring all of my client’s visions to life and taking viewers into the moment that was captured. I’m always open to collaborating with new artists and working on new ideas and concepts. Storytelling and emotion is so important in my creative process and my goal is for viewers to see the product through the clients’ lens.
What makes you happy?
Being happy to me really comes with helping others feel good and meeting new people and just being in all around good vibes around others. I love person to person interaction and the exchanging of ideas between people. One of my main goals when I “make it” I to give back as much as I absolutely can. For me, being happy is all about living in the moment and not stressing about the things that I cannot control. I’m absolutely grateful for everything that I have in my life and I use that gratefulness to inspire me to work for more and to try to inspire and uplift others as well.
