Rising Stars: Meet Meme Edwards

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meme Edwards.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m from Flint, MI born and raised. I am a self-taught makeup artist. I originally was trying to learn to do makeup on myself but then friends or other people would ask if I could do their makeup. I decided to take makeup artistry serious and in 2019, I went to esthetics school and became a licensed esthetician and MUA. I just moved to Lawrenceville, GA October of this year and I am looking forward to building my clientele in the ATL. I’m currently taking clients at TierraJ Beauty salon.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I think that a struggle that I had was going to my day job 9am to 5pm at a pediatrics office in Flint, then going to esthetics school from 5:30pm to 9pm all while being pregnant and being a mother to my 8-year-old daughter at the time. So many times I’ve wanted to quit because I was so tired. I even sometimes get burnt out, but it’s the passion for making my clients look and feel great that keeps me pushing and striving to be the best of the best.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a makeup artist that specializes in natural looks. My clientele consists of people who want to look glammed up, but also look like themselves. Even though my clients love my natural glam looks, I also think that what sets me apart is my personality. My clients and I have fun together getting to know one another while they are at their appointment. Some may even say it’s their therapy to sit in my chair. I’m an easy person to talk to and feel comfortable with. I think that making your customers feel comfortable is very important when providing a service.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something that most people don’t know is that I have alopecia. Alopecia runs in my family. After having my youngest daughter, my hair began to fall out very bad and I would get bald spots. I was very emotionally down about my hair loss. I eventually decided to shave my head bald in 2019. Even though I’m bald, I love the versatility I have with trying new wigs and giving different looks. I also love being a part of the bald community and it is so nice to connect with other bald women, be inspired by them, or inspire others who may be suffering from hair loss. I also released notebooks with pictures of bald women of all shades on them that is available on Amazon, and also hope to bring about more projects for the Bald community.
