Meet Jayson McPherson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayson McPherson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m originally from Brooklyn New York where I spent much of my teen years roaming the exciting and sometimes dangerous streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan watching the never-ending dramas of a big city play out right before my eyes. I enjoyed being a silent observer often riding the NYC subway system then one day by chance I discovered the work of Steven McCurry at that point I realized the magic of photography, his work made me see the world a little differently. Eventually, I had dreams of documenting the world in rich colors and crisp scenes of everyday life so I hopped on eBay and bought every photographer’s favorite camera (This was back in the film days) the Canon AE1. I was all set after that I roamed the streets and photographed everything made a lot of mistakes and had some happy accidents.

Then one day by chance I got my big break when I was hired to shoot a party, that’s when I realized I can make a living making images. Soon after I enrolled in photography school where I further developed my skills. My goal as a photographer has always been to occupy both the commercial photography and Fine arts spaces. For example, my “Day Job” is Real Estate photographer, drone pilot, and videographer which is a little more predictable and straightforward forward but it funds my travel, street photography, and lifestyle portraiture. I enjoy the craft of creating images in both digital and film. When someone asks me what type of photography I do? I tell them the short answer is what I don’t do? Weddings! No shade at my wedding photographers out there.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road there were a lot of trials and errors between developing my skills as an artist and keeping up with the ever-changing technologies and trends there is also a large business component in being a professional photographer. I had to learn how to market myself and do my own accounting, setting up an online portfolio and this was before websites like Square Space and Wix.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work covers a broad spectrum. I am a Visual artist (Photographer, Videographer, Illustrator, Animator, and Painter). I’m known mostly for my photography. I think the thing that sets me apart is my ability to adapt and produce creative imagery in a multitude of styles and formats.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
The thing that surprises a lot of people is that I’m a really good sim racer and have a full racing setup. They’ll come over to my place see all the art on the walls and a big collection of books and Film cameras then see a full race wheel and pedals with a gaming PC and go one of these things don’t fit, I get a kick out it.
