Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Owen.
Debra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Well, thank you for asking. I am a New Yorker originally. My family and I moved to Atlanta 15 years ago from Maryland. I grew up on an idyllic small island near the Hamptons called Shelter Island. It was so small that everyone seemed to know everyone in some way or another. It’s just really beautiful. It was like a little slice of heaven to grow up there.
I applied to become an exchange student through the Rotary Club when I was sixteen. I was ready to fly from my small island, which we jokingly called “The Rock,” and have new, exciting experiences. When I was selected to spend one year in Japan, I was elated. Talk about being able to fly away! That year, that very special year, shaped the course of the rest of my life. And the travel bug bit me.
After graduating college, I tromped around Europe for a few months using my (then) boyfriend’s childhood home in the little village of Barvaux, Belgium, as a home base of sorts. I was able to go to many places, including Brussels, Liège, Bruges, London, Ireland, and Paris. I have been lucky enough to continue to travel the world over the years throughout North America, Europe, and Asia…. And I’m not done!
My ability to speak and translate Japanese eventually led me to a career in investment banking in New York and the Washington D.C. area. This was fun but intense and not sustainable in my books when I had my twins. After the kids were born, my husband and I made the decision to move to Atlanta. Jason is originally from the Atlanta area, so this was a natural transition for us.
In Atlanta, I have found such a wonderful extensive Japanese community to connect to. I have volunteered with the Japan-America Society of Georgia on their Education Committee and some other programs. And my kids and I are all black belts with U. S. Taido, located in Peachtree Corners.
Now that my kids are teenagers, I am working again as a REALTOR® with Keller Williams Atlanta Perimeter. It took a lot of commitment to put in the hours to study for the pre-licensure exam. I knew that real estate is the perfect place for me to put my heart and energy into. I just love working with clients and helping people find the perfect place to call home. I live, work and play in the Sandy Springs/Dunwoody area, and think that it is a perfect place to settle, no matter what stage of life you and your family are in. It is perfect for anyone from singles to young families, to empty nesters to seniors. There is a perfect community for everyone.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think if anyone tells you that their journey has been a smooth road, they probably aren’t being fully transparent. Real Estate is a continually changing market, and every transaction has its own specific challenges. I am a lifelong learner and challenge myself to improve and to show up my best for my clients.
We’ve been impressed with Keller Williams Atlanta Perimeter, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Keller Williams has been present in the Atlanta area for a long time, and we have an amazing group of senior agents, banks, and legal partners, that enable us to service and counsel our clients with a wealth of knowledge and expertise. In addition, we have offices all over the world and can refer anyone to any area of the world. So, basically, if I don’t know the answer to a specific question, someone in my office will. I work with the most supportive team!
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love Atlanta for its rich history and diverse culture and neighborhoods. Every single area is unique and distinct. It has areas with a hometown feel, such as Dunwoody, but at the same time there are cosmopolitan venues and events. I recently attended The Atlanta Opera’s performance of Madama Butterfly, which was truly amazing. Then, of course, there is the hip/hop and film scene, which provides an edgier flavor.
I would say that what I like least about our city is the increasing homeless population. I feel terrible when I see this suffering. I am proud of my office, Keller Williams Atlanta Perimeter, for heading up an Angel Tree event this holiday season to support the Elizabeth Foundation (www.elizabethfoundation.org) a local organization that helps homeless people get back on their feet. We are collecting donations of various items that can support this group.
