Today we’d like to introduce you to John Crooks.
Hi John, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was inspired to start my business after I realized that I could be an “owner” in the business space and not just an “employee”. I was already doing the work, why not get paid for it?
The economy in and around Atlanta is a fertile place to launch businesses of all kinds to service a diverse group of clients. This is what I love about the city.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have faced challenges that would have derailed other business owners.
1. Learn to rest and not quit.
2. Knowing what you need and avoiding over-priced, over-hyped and underperforming business solutions. You can’t get your money back.
3. Knowing where to find your customers and not assuming, knowing what they want and how much they’re willing to pay. It’s one thing navigating on a hunch (which is expensive) and having actionable data. The latter is better.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I maintain generators. I excelled at it when I was in the military and found that there is a good market for it in other industries.
From an independent car wash with a small generator giving them issues to clients with large boats and RV’s who need generator service, large corporations that have backup generators and the homeowner that need our service. We are there…
What I am most proud of are the connections that I make with clients and you’re they’re go-to person and they tell others about you.
My heart for customers is what I believe sets me apart and living out my faith in Jesus Christ openly and proudly.
What’s next?
I am working to scale up and expand to go from servicing the Atlanta area to service most of the East Coast from Washington DC to Florida.
Generator Maintenance Specialists has attracted a business partner and are looking to grow 10x to 50x over the next 5 to 10 years. Then after that… Who knows? Maybe capture the West Coast. We have a market there also.
