Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylin Harris.
Hi Kaylin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Funny enough, when I was in the 4th grade, I got detention for the first time and my mom saw it as the brightest of ideas to take ALL of my clothes out of my closet and leave me with the brightest shirt in my closet, khaki pants, and she went and bought me white tennis shoes from Walmart. I wore that exact outfit to school every day for a week straight! I was so sick! I literally could not keep wearing it the same way, so I added different pieces that I could find to change the outfit up so it was different every day! And that was the moment that I knew I loved fashion.
How it made me feel in that moment to lose all the pieces I had for a short period of time and had to work with what I was designated with and still make it different, it taught me not only a lot about myself but about the power of fashion. I can truly say that fashion saved my life, literally. As I got older, being bullied throughout school, fashion and beauty were always an escape for me.
From being on the edge and being pulled back, fashion and beauty have been a huge part of who I have become. Over the years I have been inspired, I have inspired others, and I have shown people the power that fashion truly has on their self-esteem, and for that, I am grateful. I am now not only a Cosmetologist but a Personal and Wardrobe Stylist helping women to see a bigger vision not only in how they look on the outside but the power of how it makes them feel on the inside.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Is anything ever really easy? If it is meant for you, it’ll never be easy. I have been ridiculed for my sense of fashion and my personal style, I have been told that I am not really a “stylist” because I don’t post every move on social media or because I post most of the outfit inspiration I have on my personal page with me wearing it. The real work is what isn’t seen, and that I will forever be proud of.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Cosmetologist that specializes in Natural Protective Styles such as Human Hair & Synthetic Blend Faux Locs, Sew-Ins, Custom Wig Construction, Tape-Ins, & Wig Installs. I also am a Personal and Wardrobe Stylist, helping women to realize how Iconic they truly are!
Anyone that knows me knows I love to mix prints, colors, and textures that you wouldn’t normally see! My goal is to give women the confidence and the knowledge of the power of their wardrobe and the functionality of their pieces.
I will always be proud of the constant elevation throughout this entire process that I have shown publicly and seen personally with my style and helping others find theirs.
One thing that will set me apart is my personality. Being personable, relatable, understanding and being an active listener for what your clients want, and following through will be the biggest thing to set you apart.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Beauty and fashion are two industries that are forever changing and will ALWAYS keep you on your toes, which is exactly what I love. Trends are always coming and going. Both industries you are always able to learn, teach, and ask questions!
