Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Trotter.
Hi Alex, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
All my life I have loved creating things. It started when I was younger and would draw for hours a day. As I got older, I realized the realm of creating was much bigger than I realized. I got into camera work and immediately fell in love with it. I realized I couldn’t sit at a desk job my whole life and wanted to do something I loved so that’s when I decided to pursue a career in creative media. My faith is also a huge part of my life. I believe that God is the ultimate Creator and that we are created in His image. By creating things myself, I get the amazing opportunity to reflect The Creator and giving Him glory through it. This is truly what I desire to do throughout my creative career. I have realized in recent months that I really enjoy telling stories that matter. I love getting to film interviews of people who have fought nail and tooth to be successful in their business or couples on their wedding day capturing moments of the best day of their lives. Because of this, it has helped me to narrow down where I want to focus my attention with my business and helped me really master my storytelling in this specific area.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has most definitely not been a smooth road, but it has been a fun one! I mean, when are the straight, flat roads ever fun?
I think one of the most difficult aspects of starting my business was balancing my work life with my school/ social life. At this moment, I am set to graduate college in the spring of 2023, however, with this degree, I’ve also had to balance my schoolwork and my business work. At times I’ve been overwhelmed with projects for school all week and shoots on the weekend for the business. From this though, I’ve learned the value of managing my time well, which has helped me tremendously in all areas of my life.
I mentioned before that I like telling stories that matter, and this revelation was one of the many bumps on the road that propelled me forward. I had the opportunity to be the Director of Photography on a set in October. I remember sitting on the porch of this set after 10 hours of shooting and getting 3 hours of sleep from filming the night before completely exhausted. I thought, “this film is not even a real person or a story that matters to people and I’m so exhausted.” I had a “come to Jesus” moment and realized that as much as I loved filmmaking and telling the stories of fictional characters, I desired something more tangible and real for not only myself but the audience.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My specialty in the creative business world is camera work. I think what sets me apart most from others in the field is the personal attention to detail in each individual film and photo I create. On each shoot, I make sure that no detail goes unnoticed, especially in the editing process. When I’m filming, I’m actively thinking about the story and how I’m going to tell it when I’m editing through the motion, subject, and composition I’m capturing at that moment. This is why I’m most proud of the final videos I create. It’s a beautiful and hard process of planning, shooting, and editing, but once you see the final product, it makes all the hard work so worth it. It’s been a hard journey to get where I am today professionally, and honestly, I’m nowhere close to where I’d like to be, but I’m making steps to get there and am still proud of how far I’ve come. Most of my growth has been done by myself, but I’ve had some amazing people that have helped me along the way with the business side of things, especially my father. I was able to overcome many of the challenges I faced through the wise counsel of those around me and those who were farther into their businesses than I was.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I’d like to shout out to the Lord for gifting me with creativity and for continually providing for me in all areas of my life. Without His grace, I would not be who or where I am today. I’d also like to shout out my dad for continuing to help me run my media business, encouraging me along the way, and even helping provide work for me when I was first starting out. Doing this has been one of the hardest and most rewarding tasks of my life and I’m looking forward to more growth in the future!
