Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Lomax.
Sydney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The pile of 500+ magazines I’ve collected over the years speaks for itself. My love for fashion and expression started at a very young age. From sewing classes to walking local runway shows I knew there was no better world for me. Initially, my interests were very broad within the creative field. I dabbled in creative direction as well as fashion marketing. Eventually, I landed my way into art school, at Savannah College of Art & Design, in Savannah, Georgia and began studying Fashion Merchandising. After the pandemic, I transferred to the campus here in Atlanta and continued my studies. As I grew older, fiercer, and a little more focused, modeling eventually called my name.
I’ve since then spent a lot of time in the mirror studying my face and learning new poses.
I made self-investments, like flying to LA to attend modeling seminars and just recently walked my first fashion show in ATL. It has only been a year since I’ve truly dove into Atlanta’s creative scene and I look forward to meeting more like-minded creatives and establishing my career here! I’ve done several photoshoots to develop my skills, but I plan on expanding and becoming a full-time creative.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has been the farthest thing from a smooth ride. Along with so many other millennials, the pandemic had a major effect on the trajectory of my education my first two years of college. I have since then, allowed life to be my guide and teacher. There are tons of relevant books I read to aid with my life’s journey as well. I never plan on putting an end to my education, regardless of how I decide to obtain the knowledge.
As far as my brand, It started with an idea, a sketch, a vision all in my little head. I never imagined people to purchase or understand my angle. I’m so grateful for the support I’ve received up until this point. Two years ago, I started off selling two-piece swimsuits for Upgrade that I sat and made for hours. I didn’t even know how to make a pattern. Quite honestly, I had no idea what I was doing. But, I have continued to flow and grow in my craft and expanded my brand with accessories and wellness products. I am beyond excited to continue to share my vision and my creations through Upgrade! It’s honestly just the beginning.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As I speak of self-investments, I learned this past year the importance of taking care of yourself. In the midst of content creation, fashion shows, and photoshoots the goal is to feel good and look even better!
So, I made self-care a priority, which is what I founded my brand on, Upgrade.
My intent is to put in emphasis on “upgrading” your daily lifestyle.
For example, including tea into your routine with our frosted mug.
Living and being healthy doesn’t have to be a hassle. Adding simple steps to incorporate better habits into your day can be easy! Beauty is created from the inside out, but the cherry on top is external elegance!
I sell daily essentials like fashion frames, jewelry, and wellness products! The perfect balance of fashion and wellness. This is Upgrade.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Know for Sure, which is an organic podcast that focuses on healing, growing, and evolving. The book “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle is a really good read that has helped me stay present. Sacred Woman is a very intentional read that requires time and devotion as you step into your divine femininity. I’m currently reading it and it has helped tremendously with my feminine journey. The Self Love Fix Podcast by Beatrice Kamau is a good tune-in that touches on several subjects, including shadow work and journaling. Really good to relate to other black women who have or are passing through similar obstacles in life.
