Today we’d like to introduce you to Kierra Dixson.
Kierra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am 29 years old. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Growing up in Detroit, I learned early in life that your education is a valuable tool and to strive to do your best in all that you do. I knew from the jump, I wanted to be successful and to take care of my family by any means – this is where my hustle kicked in.
I attended Michigan State University to pursue a degree in Computer Engineering. Prior to the start of the semester; I was invited to join the Engineering and Science Success Academy – now, that was hard work. Waking up to attend an 8AM class was not my idea of college, lol. We learned skills that will allow us to be successful as an Engineer; so this is when the importance of structure resonated with me.
I’ve always been an outgoing, ambitious person – especially when it came to public speaking. So, fast-forward it shouldn’t have come as a surprise to my family and friends when I decided to transfer to Wayne State University to major in Public Relations.
I knew I would thrive in the heart of my city! I’ve connected with the Who’s Who of Detroit while attending networking events. I worked with small to large corporations to increase their brand awareness, which inspired me to create the Melaninaire brand in 2020. Melaninaire Public Relations was created to help entrepreneurs, creatives and community leaders sharpen their lens of diversity and inclusion.
MPR has scaled immensely! We’ve expanded across country to Phoenix, Arizona and gained over 20 inspiring PR Professionals as Interns worldwide.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has not been as easy, but I honestly wouldn’t change a thing. Not only did I switch majors, but I transferred colleges which forced me into making new connections with colleagues. I remember my first PR writing class; my professor read me! Seemed like every paper I wrote, she either rejected it or criticized. I started to attend her after hours to find out what her deal was. In fact, it was one of the best things I could have done. She stated, “I know you can do better.” She insisted that I did not hold back and to pour out into my writing and not rush the process. I must say, she was right! I became very strategic in my writing/interviewing and it paid off.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
