Conversations with Karen Penn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Penn.

Hi Karen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have written my first fiction novel entitled When Momma Never Heals that is based on various true stories from my past with a twist. The book focuses on the dysfunctional relationship between a single mother and her two daughters. They endure violence, betrayal, disappointment, indiscretion, poverty and death before there is a turning point where there is a conversion to Christianity that changes the course of everyone’s life.

My hope is that readers will reflect on and consider forgiveness that is needed towards guardians who may have mistreated them and maybe not intentionally but who need forgiveness. I also hope that readers will consider healing and how childhood traumas may be affecting their present relationships with friends or the lack thereof, or their children or their spouses or potential mates.

I will be offering three one hour sessions for mothers and daughters virtually via zoom starting Wednesday, February 1st through Thursday, February 3rd 2023 at 7pm. Each night will focus on a different step towards healing from trauma, brokenness and disappointment from the past. Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My book is the result of several years of journaling and reflecting back on my childhood, teen years and young adult life and the things I’ve endured that molded me into the person I am today. Many reflections were difficult and many brought a smile to my face.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am enjoying writing but I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. I paint portraits from photos. I illustrate children’s books and I have begun an annual virtual art exhibit where a portion of the funds are given to college students to help with books and supplies. Anyone can join the Facebook group page under Annual Art Exhibit or go to: https://www.facebook.com/groups/4967717826571655

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the diversity of my city and the community events that bring people together from all walks of life to help one another find resources and connect with people in the community.

What I dislike about my city is that there are not enough programs to help our youth with how to communicate and to know what healthy relationships are and look like.
