Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Flowers.
Hi Kay, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I decided to start Rosa’s Home Care Solutions after years of working in the healthcare field and witnessing the unruly, insensitive, and unjustifiable treatment of individuals that were unable to completely care for themselves.
Many things have contributed to these unhealthy care environments that exist including staffing shortages, less than desirable pay, and just simply the wrong individuals holding these positions. My goal is to bring dignity, respect, compassion and actual CARE back into the healthCARE field. This focus is primarily within in-home healthcare because many people are now wanting to remain comfortable during their times of need,
What better way to feel comfortable than to be in your own home where you also feel safe?
I started Rosa’s in 2017, only providing services to residents in Clayton County, Georgia. Since, we have been licensed with the Georgia Department of Community Health and service clients/patients in Henry, Clayton, Dekalb, Fulton, and Fayette. We will be adding more service areas this year.
Rosa’s staff is comprised of individuals that are licensed, skilled, and compassionate. Compassion is the number one characteristic needed in a field such as healthcare and that’s why the employment process for this agency includes a HHA personality test which focuses on “behavior” of traits that won’t change over time such as compassion, empathy, and caring.
Rosa’s Home Care Solutions has grown tremendously over the years and the plan is to continue growing and caring.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I started Rosa’s Home Care Solutions alone. No partner, no consultants, no help. I completed all of the licensing, accreditations, and hiring myself. I was the only employee providing service to clients initially and also playing the role of administrator, manager, and staffing coordinator. It sometimes became overwhelming but by the grace of God, I was able to handle it all myself before hiring a team to assist. Additionally, I have always worked full-time while operating Rosa’s which was a bit stressful as well, but I was fortunate enough to hold a position that allowed me the autonomy to handle my full-time job responsibilities while at the same time taking any business calls, handling any business matters, etc. that I needed to for Rosa’s.
People often make the mistake of thinking that as an entrepreneur there is some type of unspoken rule that you cannot work a full- or part-time job and successfully grow your business. They look at it as some type of betrayal to yourself (lol) and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Businesses take time to flourish and there is nothing wrong with allowing yourself multiple streams of income to provide for your family while still making your ultimate dreams become reality. To this day I still work a full-time position at a company, and it has not hindered the growth of Rosa’s Home Care Solutions at all. There will be challenges and obstacles, but your determination will get you where you want to be. Keep pushing.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Rosa’s Home Care Solutions provides a range of in-home care options for seniors, adults with disabilities, and post-operative patients. Don’t think of our services as one-size-fits all. We know everyone’s needs are different, so our care plans are uniquely tailored to each individual. Whether it’s helping with dressing and hygiene, providing medication reminders, or simply providing transportation to medical appointments,
Our services are categorized: personal care, companion care, and specialty care.
Personal care would consist of the day-to-day things that people often take for granted like climbing stairs, taking care of personal hygiene and even just getting out of bed in the morning. But these things can become major challenges as you age or if you’ve been injured. Rosa’s Home Care provides nurses and caregivers that are available to help.
Companion care is more so for our older or disabled population. As you get older, you may find it hard to keep up with things. You may struggle to do household chores or run errands. With our Companion Care services, we aim to make sure you don’t have to struggle with the day-to-day. More importantly, our caregivers promote healthy living and well-being through the benefits of social interaction.
Specialty Care Services include Prenatal & Postnatal Caregivers that are available to help before or after your pregnancy. If your doctor limited your activities, required you to be on bed rest during your pregnancy, or if you are experiencing complications after delivery, we can help you make sure you’re comfortable, cared for and that getting back on your feet is as simple as possible.
End-of-Life Care. When terminally ill, many people prefer to spend their remaining days at home where they are most familiar. This can put a lot of pressure on family members. Our hospice care service provides support for family and comfort care for clients.
Alzheimer’s and Dementia care falls into the category of specialty care as well. Conditions that result in a change of mood, memory or the thinking process are especially tough and caring for these family members can be stressful. Rosa’s provides caregivers that are specially trained at hire to recognize the signs of dementia, appropriately handling and using skills to promote calmness and comfort.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice would be to totally and completely submerge yourself in what you are interested in or your field of business. You should attend workshops and meet other like-minded people in your field of interest. Things as simple as following Instagram accounts and hashtags that are focused in your area matters a lot. When I log into Instagram, yes, I see the postings of friends and family and I love to see it but as I stoll I’m also consuming info related to my business field. I follow hashtags and/or accounts like #homecare #careathome #marketinginhealthcare. I like learning new things that can benefit my business and help.
