Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Spicer.
Sarah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2011, I was entering my fourth year of medical device sales. I had a successful track record and had substantially grown a territory that was inundated with competition. However, I knew that was not what I wanted to do the rest of my life. So, I quit my job, got a tattoo and enrolled in film school to pursue my dreams of acting, writing and filmmaking.
I moved back to Atlanta in 2012 and focused on acting but quickly found that I enjoyed production side a little more. In 2013, I co-produced a WWII feature and that same year, I co-directed and produced a documentary with a colleague of mine. That film is called, “Hope For Steve” and it is about a couple from right here in Atlanta. They are a heroic, resilient couple who are battling Steve’s ALS. We took their story to film festivals where it won awards and got picked up on national media and distribution.
It has been nothing short of a journey learning how to be an entrepreneur, a creative, a woman in business and a closet introvert. But those lessons have been invaluable and we are currently in preproduction for our next documentary, which the team and I are incredibly excited about!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In life, I don’t believe there is such a thing as a smooth road. No, it has definitely been rocky, shaky, winding, sharp, inclined, declined, jagged and curved. There have been points of smooth and exciting and triumphant and believe me, those moments are cherished!
Probably the biggest struggle along the way has been learning not WHAT I need to be doing, but WHO I need to be being. It has been learning to prioritize and perhaps most importantly, it has been learning what to actually put time, energy and effort into. When you are starting out, it is so easy to jump at anything and everything because generally people starting are hungry and looking for opportunity. But not all things are worth YOU, you know?
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Spicer Productions story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a production company focusing on reality story telling. Having a medical background, I am drawn to medical stories and thoroughly enjoy working with nonprofits. We are known for documentary filmmaking and business videos but also have event videos, real estate videos, public speaking videos and commercial, film and television on our reel.
As a company, I am most proud of our documentary and extremely excited about this next one.
What sets us apart from others? Clients have told us that they enjoy our service and we certainly strive to exceed expectations. But what I think really sets us apart, is the heart and the passion we put into our films and our clients’ stories. We truly understand how to capture the essence of a person and bring out authenticity in people on camera.
What also sets us apart is our mindset. This is not just a job. Being able to be in business in this industry is a privilege that we do not take for granted and we are incredibly passionate about what we do. We value our clients and set high goals for ourselves for each project we take on.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Okay… this is one of “those” questions. (winky face.) Luck… I am not sure I believe in luck, which I am completely surprised I am saying.
I believe in opportunity, hard work and preparation. I believe in creating opportunity (for some, I guess that is luck) for yourself. I believe in creating the life you want and doing whatever it takes (without hurting anybody) to achieve that. I believe in picking yourself up when you are down, dusting yourself off and charging forward again better and wiser than before. Yes, there are things that happen that are out of a person’s control, but is that bad luck or is that life? Maybe what’s lucky is if you are stubborn enough to persevere despite circumstances.
