Community Highlights: Meet Janae Miller of Kindness and Intervention

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janae Miller. She and her team share their story with us below:

Kindness and Intervention (KAI) is a home-based Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) provider created by Janae J. Miller, who is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Her inspiration stems from her younger sister, Kai, who was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in 2014. After graduating in 2016 Cum Laude from Georgia State University with a BS in Neuroscience, Ms. Miller began working with children on the spectrum as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT). Driven and determined, she searched for ways to help the Autism community which led her to Simmons University, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2020, from the behavior analysis master’s program. After graduating she obtained her board certification. Along her journey, she realized the lack of African American representation in the field of ABA. She also recognized the importance of consistency across environments which make ABA strategies more effective. This prompted her to create KAI.

Our mission is to provide effective home and community-based ABA services to individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and other behavior disorders. KAI aims to make an impact on every individual we serve by using research-based behavior analysis strategies while simultaneously building a great rapport with families. We specialize in early intervention, ages 18 months to 12 years of age, but we also work adolescents ages 13 to 18. We are compliant with the Behavioral Analyst Certification Board compliance codes. We are currently a proud provider of Georgia Medicaid (CareSource, AmeriGroup, Peach State), Aetna, Cigna, BCBS, and TriCare.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the main challenges I faced when starting my business was credentialing with insurance companies and staffing. It took over a year for the credentialing process to be completed. I needed the credentials in order to accept clients with insurance. Otherwise, they would have to pay out of pocket, which can be very costly for a family. Finding staff that has a true passion for working with special needs children can be challenging. Thankfully, my staff is phenomenal and all have a passion for working and helping children with special needs. We are currently hiring all over the metro Atlanta area and we are willing to train.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am extremely proud to be a female black-owned business that is servicing families within my community. What sets KAI apart from other ABA companies is that we are here to support families and clients through all hardships that come with an Autism, or other behavior deficit, diagnosis. We create individualized treatment plans for our clients and we ensure that the therapist and client build a great rapport. We offer flexible scheduling with home based and community based sessions to help clients work on various skills functionally.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is being able to do what you want, when you want, how you want and where you want. Doing what makes you happy, your way and on your terms. Finding a career you love that doesn’t just feel like a job. Finding your purpose while being able to share the knowledge you have gained to help others. To be happy and to do what you truly love is success at its finest.
