Today we’d like to introduce you to Torriana Mcghee.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hair and beauty have always been a part of my life. Growing up my mom used to do hair. I hated getting my hair done by my mom because she’d always brush my forehead instead of my edges. Lol. I always loved how I felt and looked after she was done. Looking in the mirror seeing how she enhanced my natural beauty amazed me every time. That’s exactly how I want my clients to feel every time they get out of my chair. I remember my parents gave me this Bratz head where you can do its makeup and hair, and boy oh boy little did I know this was about to be the spark of new found interest.
Fast forward a couple of years later, I’ve always known how to do hair but just never took it seriously because I didn’t think I could. Year 2020, my sisters *Kai, Yanna, and Pink* and best friends *Adriana, Bryana, & Andrew* would encourage me to start my business but I’d always be like nah. My best friend Bryana would let me practice sew-ins and things of that nature on her before I really even knew what I was doing. In 2020, my bestfriend launched her own hair business “Stylezzbybreee.” Seeing her take that leap of faith and seeing her growth and how she was happy doing what she loved inspired me to launch my business. So September 10, 2021, TorriSlaayedmeLLC was born. It has been a slow start only doing my sister’s and friend’s hair but eventually, other people were booking. This is all still a learning process and an experience for me. This is just the start to something huge, worldwide even. I have so many plans and ideas for my brand that I know I will achieve because I’ve already been crossing some of my goals off my list.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When starting something new it’ll always be bumps in the road, that’s what builds character. One of my struggles that I had to endure was clientele. Clientele doesn’t happen overnight; it can take years to build a steady clientele. Clientele is something I’m still working on and still building but thank you to my TSM babes for booking, always supporting, reposting, liking, sharing, commenting all of that, because that brings traction to my page and may possibly influence someone to book me. So to all my business owners don’t get discouraged your time is coming. Just promote yourself. How do they know it exists if you don’t promote yourself?
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to call myself an Artist and Hairstylist because hair is art. Those different parts, different designs, the way the curls lay are all considered art. One thing I’m most proud of is always being myself and never looking at anyone else success and comparing it to my own. I know who I am and god has a plan for me and when I get to looking at other’s life I’m deterred from the plan. Something that sets me apart from others is you’ll never have the experience of being “slaayedbyTorri”, yeah you can go get a sew-in, silk press, half-up half down, closure install, custom color on your natural, natural hair treatments from other stylists but you’ll never have the Torrislaayedme experience.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I do recommend finding a mentor. I have one, her name is Chariena aka ChartheeStar, she is amazing. Before Char became my mentor, I viewed my parents “Chanda & Toris Mcghee”, my uncle Lando, my aunt Keisha, both of my grandmas & Bresha all as mentors. Having someone in your life that’s at a level you want to be is always beneficial, soak in that knowledge and learn from them. Some advice for networking is “closed mouths don’t get fed,” how will someone know you have a product or a business if you never speak about it? Promote yourself and invest in yourself.
