Today we’d like to introduce you to Keiani Taylor.
Hi Keiani, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Music has always been a part of me. My mom always tells this story of how even as an infant I would hum myself to sleep. I used to write songs by myself when I came of age to read and write. At the age of 10, I wrote my very first poem. That’s when I really realized I had a gift with words. I’ve been writing ever since!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can’t say that it’s’ been easy at all LOL. I’m in a constant state of introspection and self-improvement. Writing really helps me funnel through my feelings and experiences and reflect on the why, how, and what of my personal struggles. Just like the majority of people, I have trauma to unpack and sort and throw away. Growing up and understanding that no one is coming to save me and that it’s up to me to show up for and save myself has been the most difficult lesson to learn. I am always trying to figure out ways to be a better human within this journey of life. So my biggest challenge to overcome has truly been myself: being better, doing better, reflecting, and self-accountability. It’s hard but necessary!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have several creative outlets I utilize on a regular. I am most known for my poetry. I write and perform poetry and I have two published books. I also am a musician. I play several woodwind instruments but my specialty is Bass Clarinet. I am also a band director at a high school! And within the past two years, I picked up music production. Making beats is my newest skill I’m trying to master. I’m so proud of myself for even starting because I know 14-year-old me would be so proud!
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Having good character is the most important skill you need to be successful. There’s a saying I love to reference that says, “Talent can get you to the next level but good character will keep you there.” This has been key to my success. I would not have made it to the heights I have within my career thus far if it wasn’t for my character/reputation. It’s one of those things that can make or break an opportunity before you even enter a room. I believe in just being genuine, reliable, and kind!
