Community Highlights: Meet Dan Fadida of Espy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Fadida.

Hi Dan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always enjoyed thinking about business ideas. It was fun for me from a young age. When I was 14-15, I was selling England World Cup car flags at car boot sales (equivalent to flea markets in the US; I lived in England until the age of 18). I thought it was amazing and exhilarating (even though the flags turned out to be a terrible business venture) that you could buy and sell or provide a service to someone else and make a profit; it still is.

Espy started from a combination of some of the best 150+ ideas that I had written down in an app. The discovery process behind premium unknown products is cool to me and I liked the fact that we could help other businesses do better. Subscription boxes are great because they bring an air of happiness into someone’s life, something for people to look forward to.

I subscribed to a number of boxes but none were really catered to me, I only used and liked 1-2 out of the 6-7 products in the box. What was I going to do with beard oil when I don’t have a beard? I thought there has to be a better, more personalized approach. Everyone is different and has different habits and preferences so the box should be personalized and designed for the individual. I also found out through my wife that men (and me in particular) are really hard to shop for; the box is great for men who want to treat themselves and great for significant others that don’t know what to get their man!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been as smooth as it can be up to this point (the company is only a few months old) and I have definitely learned from previous business experiences and mistakes, which has made things less stressful. However, my answer to that would have to be, no. Starting a business is never really smooth, they’re just too much to do and figure out. If it’s too smooth in the beginning, you’re likely not solving a big enough problem or not pushing yourself hard enough.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Espy Box is a highly personalized gift box for men. Gift givers complete a questionnaire on our website, This gives us information on the gift receiver’s lifestyle habits and preferences. Espy will then curate a box especially for the individual based on questionnaire responses.

Any big plans?
We’re still young and focused on one month/quarter at a time at the moment as we build the business. Some of our plans for the future include making the process on the back and front end of the site automated.
