Life and Work with Krys Alex

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krys Alex.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My earliest experience as a photographer began at age 14, while living in Jamaica. I had a point and shoot camera and I couldn’t stop looking at my collection of National Geographic magazines. The articles and photographs interested me because it involved stories on rural communities, environmental issues and impoverished areas; all things I encountered while living in Kingston. After high school, I moved to Atlanta to attend Oglethorpe University. I took a digital photography class one semester and made it my goal to buy a DSRL camera. Once I bought it, I never put it down. I literally knew nothing technical about my camera until, I began learning more from reading articles, meeting great photographers who became my mentors and even e-mailing photojournalists who were contributors to National Geographic magazines. I literally e-mailed anyone who had a photo tip article. After reading a few replies, I started to rent different lenses and took them to street sessions (I found those on meetup.com). With practice, I got better at shooting in manual mode. Within a year, I started to photograph my friends, families, babies, couples and events. I was eager to photograph anything. During this time, I visited my family in Miami and Jamaica and began documenting the homeless communities. I had to tell a story and build an archive of individuals facing the challenges that they were facing. I finally acquired more work that interested me and I haven’t stopped grinding since.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think any journey is smooth. First, I had to think about what type of photography I wanted to do, which took time. That was my struggle for a while because I wasn’t a technical photographer. Now, I can set up lights and check my exposure and all of those things but I enjoyed documenting what’s already there. Still, I knew I had to learn technical things in order to survive in this industry. Once I let go of my fear of branching out of my comfort zone, it became easier to learn everything at my own pace.

My advice for other women would be to never stop learning, experiment with everything you enjoy doing. Don’t be afraid to fail. Keep working at what you love and don’t be scared to ask for help. There are so many resources now to accomplish your goals. Start somewhere and keep going, no matter how long it takes. The time will pass anyway.

I’m a freelance photographer, with a knack for professional lifestyle and commercial photography. When it comes to portraits, I believe in creating an experience with someone, rather than just an image. I strive to make my subject connect with the traditional use of natural light and I’m most proud of making my photographs feel like real moments.

Who have you been inspired by?
My mom always inspired me most even though, she has been gone for 3 years. She pushed me to be myself, something I wasn’t very comfortable with. She was very passionate and free-spirited which is something important to embrace as an artist.
