Today we’d like to introduce you to Bridget Ford.
Hi Bridget, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am so much better than what I was and where I thought I would be. I remember walking on the sidewalk with everything I owned in a trash bag beside me. I focused on making it to tomorrow, let alone next year. No one person has everything. No one person has it all. But in one moment, I lost everything I valued the most, which is family.
I began scrambling for a place to stay, searching for food to eat, and praying for peace. I walked up and down the hot pavement every day while I stayed in a motel to get a job at any fast food restaurant that would give me a chance. Every piece of my journey took a part of me. From deciding to go to school to be a nurse to writing my first book, Strength Beneath the Scars, I have been broken in ways I would have never imagined, but I am also stronger than the eyes can see. From an author to the doctoral program in nursing, I am grateful for new opportunities and continued success.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some of the challenges I faced to be where I am today were a poor support system, financial struggles, and a lack of knowledge of various opportunities. A support system is half the battle in life. They provide an ear, a voice of reason, and knowledge. Without a support system, you feel defeated before you begin. The feeling of loneliness was an understatement.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I provide care and support as a writer, a speaker, and a Registered Nurse. I enjoy providing hope to those who do not see a future and the knowledge they need to move forward. I am proud that God has blessed me with the ability to listen to those who barely say a word. As an advocate for mental health awareness, I am proud that I am able to help others overcome feelings of depression, loneliness, or fear of the unknown by sharing my experience and providing my support.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the freedom of culture. I am able to truly be myself. I would love to see more African American-owned bookstores in the area.
