Today we’d like to introduce you to Leanne Hymes.
Hi Leanne, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve loved photography since high school (more years ago than I want to admit!). Since then, I’ve immersed myself in education and practice. When my son was born in 2016, I realized there were so many details about him and that season of life that I wanted to remember. But I couldn’t because I was so sleep deprived! Becoming a mother was immensely rewarding and challenging. That experience helped inform the focus of my business, which I opened in 2019. I strive to document the love that parents have for their children so that when their children are grown they have a record of how loved they are.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a small business owner certainly has its challenges. In addition to photography, I’m also a pediatric physical therapist. It’s been a learning curve to figure out how to manage a full-time job, a small business and remains present for my family. I’ve had to accept that I can’t do it all and have worked hard at setting priorities. My biggest priority is my family and lowest priority is folding laundry!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in newborn and family photography. The feedback I receive the most from clients is how patient I am with their kids. I believe kids should be allowed to roam and play and be silly during our sessions. As a mom and a physical therapist, I know how much kids need to move and I encourage it.
For newborns, I specialize in in-home sessions. It’s a joy to be able to go into people’s homes and see the space they’ve created to raise their families. Having a baby is a wonderful and stressful time and my goal is to make the experience as relaxing as possible.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
The advice I’d give to someone starting out in photography is to practice as much as you possibly can. I’ve completed three 365 projects where I took a photo every day for a year. Those were instrumental in me learning how to see the light, discover my own creative voice and learn how to shoot in challenging conditions.
