Today we’d like to introduce you to Majic D. Hunter. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Majic D. Hunter aka “Da Big Homie” was born as Jermarcus Dewange Hunter February 8, 1978 in Mobile Alabama. Being the product of a single-parent home, Mr. Hunter (as he refers to himself for business purposes) has channeled his energy into becoming a playwright, director, producer and owner of GabbiGrace Films & Theatre which he named after his beautiful daughter. Mr. Hunter is most noted for his work as a professional actor and hilarious stand-up comedian. The early years of young Hunter’s life wasn’t so pleasant. As so many other greats before him, he was too faced with many adversities. He first discovered his skill or talent to be funny as a defense mechanism as a result of constantly being teased and humiliated because his stuttering or speech impediment. As a result of not being confident in his ability to speak, writing became his form of an outlet and for a while his main line of communication.
By the time young Hunter was finishing high school at John L. Leflore, magnet school for the arts, he had become very popular as the undisputed funny man on campus. Not only was he being noted for being funny, young Hunter started showing off his writing skills through a T.V. production class that allowed him to write, direct, film, and edit the school’s first T.V. commercial that aired on all local stations. It was during this time that young Hunter discovered whenever he was acting or imitating other people, he didn’t stutter. So he developed a new character that didn’t stutter and named him Majic. Young Hunter who is now known as Majic began to study motivational speakers and preachers or anyone he thought spoke very well. Ironically Cassius Clay, who changed his named to Mohammed Ali, became Majic’s role model. After spending some time in the Air Force, Majic decided to go college. He attended Alabama State University where he met his lifelong teacher and mentor Dr. Tonea Stewart who starred in CBS sitcom “In the Heat of the Night” and movie “A Time to Kill”. Although Majic started out as a business major following in his uncle footsteps, he decided to follow his heart and take a different path and became a theater major; and becoming the first in his family to chase a dream.
Dr. Stewart or Doc (as Majic would refer to her) took him up under her wing and fine-tuned his skills that he developed over the years. She showed him how to use his talents effectively. Under Dr. Stewart’s leadership Majic develop his first comedy show called “The Funnie Bone” and debuted in his first stage play “Drums of Sweetwater” as Fred Washington; written by Thomas Meloncon. These were the first of many to follow. After receiving just about every award that could be earned from lighting design to sound to set design and acting, Majic received a very prestigious award that was the first of it kind in school history, “The Best Adaptable Artist Award” which is known now as the Majic Award. This award is for students in the arts who have exceeded expectations in all areas including academics. Majic graduated Alabama State University with his bachelor’s degree in theater arts at the top of his class in an elite group of performers that were recruited by some of the top graduate schools in the country including Penn State University, Ohio State University, The University of Louisville, and UCLA. But Majic declined all offers and turned professional by signing with Public Awareness Theater as a character actor. By the end of his first year with Public Awareness Theater, he was managing and directing this million-dollar company.
During Mr. Majic Hunter’s five-year tenure with Public Awareness Theater, he has single-handedly took a mediocre theater company and transformed it into a well-oiled machine competing with well-respected theater companies or what some would consider to be the best in the country. Mr. Hunter is known on the chilling circuit as “Best Undiscovered Talent”. Now that Mr. Hunter has been blessed with a baby girl, he decided to take some time off the road to spend time with his daughter during these delicate years of her life. He also wanted to take time to build the foundations for his own theater company in Atlanta, GA which is known as GabbiGrace Films & Theatre. This is where Mr. Hunter writes, directs, and produces his own productions. Mr. Majic Hunter is currently still doing stand-up comedy, oversees two studios, one for film and one for music known as “Boom Studios” in Atlanta, GA, receiving his master’s in Special Education, while working full-time as an Admission Counselor for the United States Job Corps; respectfully earning the title of “DA BIG HOMIE” in Atlanta, GA.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Great Question I often use to ask God why me? Why am I going Through so much? I know I’m a good person. I try to do right by people. Then God revealed to me this is what you prayed for. You prayed for Greatness. At that moment, I understood The assignment as the young people would say. These obstacles and challenges I am facing is not because I am doing something wrong. These are my opportunities to be great. You can’t have a Testimony without the test. That changed the narrative for me and the paradigm started to shift.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Honestly, I turned Hustling into an art. I’m known for many things from Business Development, Acting, Stand Up Comedy, Producing Stage Plays and Now Films. But what I’m most proud of is Motivational Speaking and Inspiring others to believe in the impossible. I would say what sets me apart from others is my unshakeable faith in God.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
