Today we’d like to introduce you to Shameka James-Johnson.
Shameka, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
For some time now I’ve been longing to become my own boss, and felt that I was meant to run my own show and to not work for someone else. I’ve always envisioned being an entrepreneur my whole life, I like to say I was born this way. For six years I was working as a Therapist / Office Manager at a Chiropractic Office although I loved my job and my boss I was ready for something else. I was feeling held back from my true calling. October 1 2017 Was a big tragedy in my life. My 17-year-old son was killed, he was my only son so I was left with my three daughters who needed me to be strong. I had to find myself all over again at the age of 37. So October 1, 2019 Lavishbody Contouring Spa was born. I provided body contouring and sculpting services but I wanted to add more services to my spa, kind of like a one stop shop for beauty. I’ve always had an interest in working with skin and beauty products so in 2020 I enrolled in esthetics school to become a licensed esthetician. After obtaining my esthetic license I changed my business name to Lavishbody beauty spa which is more reflective of the services I provide.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would actually say it was a pretty smooth road my first year in business but year two is when things got tough. It reached a point that I started to question myself, did I make the right decision starting my own business. This is what makes me happy so I have to keep pushing. I have three daughters, I have to show them that even when unfortunate things happen in life, you have to remain strong and keep pushing. I have hopes that my son, who would now be 22 years old, is looking down on me; proud of how his mother is coping with life and showing his sisters my strength.
As you know, we’re big fans of Lavishbody Beauty Spa. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I specialize in Full body waxing, Brazilians, Facials and Body Sculpting/ Contouring. I offer a wide variety of services to help you feel like the most confident, polished, and glowing version of yourself. I believe self-care isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity, and everyone deserves a little “me time”. I’m passionate about what I do, and I care about helping my clients reach their skincare and body goals. What I’m most proud of is the fact that I’m still here after all my hard work. I’m three years into my business even after starting during the pandemic. What sets me apart from others is that I will not simply provide a service for the sake of money. If an individual has a contraindication, physical or age-related no services will be provided at my spa. The sad truth is some providers will perform any number of services on individuals without considering any of these factors.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Advice to others who’s thinking of starting their own beauty spa. Do it!!! Don’t let anything or anyone discourage you from your dreams and goals, it will truly be rewarding in the end.
