Today we’d like to introduce you to Ymani Foster.
Ymani, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
AlysseNYC was created for the little girls who never got a chance to play in their mother’s closets. Once I had my daughter, Aspen Alysse, I decided that it’s my time to create a brand. I wanted to create something for her. Before even thinking about children, I had already saved so many bags for my daughter. Which inspired the thought, why don’t I have a business for her or based around her. I started designing at 11 years old, I was into designing denim and making shoes, well adding gems & feathers onto shoes. I would distress all my friends denim jeans in Highschool. I’ve always been obsessed with ostrich feathers and once I had my daughter as she started to grow she was just as girly as me it gave me that push to make my dream of designing come true. She’s so girly and every time she sees something I created she is filled with elation. This business is about the start of generational wealth and following my dreams. I wanted to show my daughter that a girl who came from nothing can have everything she’s ever wanted. The first time people started to notice my brand was when Jai Nice purchased a dress from me. Once she wore the black swan dress on New Year’s Day 2022, my brand took off.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This has been nowhere near a smooth road. Understanding business and what will sell your business is an everyday learning experience. I am doing good I’m just not where I want to be yet. I see myself in big stores like SAKS, Neiman Marcus, The Webster, and Bergdorf Goodman. I have yet to have a fashion show.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am wife, mom of three and a fashion designer. I am known for my ostrich feather-based brand. I am most proud of the fact I stay true to myself. It took me three years of hard work before I released my brand. Really learning feathers and finding the right factories and materials. I am very proud stayed true to myself I never let anyone steer my visions about my fashion sense in any other direction. I feel I was ahead of my time with fashion. I’ve been obsessed with ostrich feathers since I was 16 years old, I used to purchase cheap shoes and just decorate them with feathers.
What makes you happy?
Family makes me happy. Spending my time with them and being able to do what I love so that I’m more available for them. Yes, I work 24/7 but I find time. I don’t miss school plays or dance recitals. I love to create different garments that people adore. Sometimes I even style some of my customers. I go above and beyond to make them happy.
