Rising Stars: Meet Melanie Morgan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Morgan.

Hi Melanie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In 1989, I learned my trade under the supervision of a master jeweler and the Frankfurt goldsmith guild in Frankfurt Germany. In 1995, my husband and I moved to Georgia with our then 1-year-old daughter. I mostly worked part-time in jewelry stores as a bench jeweler combining my profession with raising two children. For the past 20 years, I worked flexible hours at a local Jewelry Store in Athens GA. I started my own business approximately six years ago while still working at Aurum to have more freedom in creating my own designs. After covid hit and our youngest moved out of the house, I realized that life is short and resigned from my job at Aurum. Some trial and error in the beginning led to my decision to be a wholesale business and sell through Galleries. That decision offers me the flexibility to travel for longer periods of time. Occasionally, I do custom designs for those that are willing to wait.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
This is my second time opening a business. I was too overwhelmed the first time.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am most proud of my technical skills as a jeweler and they are the foundation of my artistic creativity. It is not just about the end result, but also about how I got there. I am mostly known for my silver pieces with 24-karat gold fused on. I wanted to create affordable one of a kind pieces with precious materials.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I was lucky to have a supportive husband with a steady income and health insurance. Without that, I couldn’t have my own business, especially since I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 20 years ago.
