Today we’d like to introduce you to Dodley Joseph.
Hi Dodley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a Haitian hip-hop artist from Lake Worth, Florida, my story begins with a love for music that started at a young age. In 2004, I wrote my first song and began to explore the world of music production. Over the years, I honed my skills and in 2011, I won the Producer Excellence Award at the Gwinnett Media Festival. In 2012, I was hired as a teacher at Lanier High School to teach music technology, and in 2014, I was honored as the Producer of the Year at Honors Night.
In 2015, I released my first song, which I had written, produced, and engineered myself. This was a turning point for me as an artist and opened up new doors for my career. In 2016, I was booked for my first show in Atlanta at a strip club, and in 2017, I executive produced and engineered a project for the first time.
In 2019, I released my first body of work, an EP called “Field Nxtez,” which streamed over 65k times and led to a meeting with Spotify. The following year, I starred in an independent film and had my music used in a film for the first time, as well as released my first beat tape with healing songs.
In 2021, I released and sold my first NFT, co-directed a film, spoke at the NFT con, traveled to California, performed at Camp N Trip, got interviewed for the first time, and got interviewed on live television. To top it all off, I sold 1 million records that year. Now, in 2022, I’m excited to release my second EP, “Feeled Notez Vol. 2,” which will be available as an NFT, and I’m looking forward to performing at Juneteenth and the Sweet Auburn Festival, among other events.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As an artist, I face a lot of obstacles and challenges on my journey. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is being an independent artist without the backing of a major record label. This means that I have to work extra hard to promote and market myself, as well as handle all the logistics and finances that come with producing and releasing music. Another obstacle I’ve faced is finding my own unique sound and staying true to myself while still appealing to a wider audience. Finally, the COVID-19 pandemic has also presented challenges in terms of live performances and collaborations, but I’ve been finding new and creative ways to connect with my fans and continue to create music.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As an artist, my work is about creating music that reflects my life experiences and the experiences of those around me. My sound is rooted in hip-hop, but I draw inspiration from a variety of genres, including R&B, soul, and jazz. I also produce and engineer my own music, which allows me to have complete creative control over my sound. I look to elevate consciousness through art form.
With each project I release, I strive to push myself creatively and evolve as an artist. My upcoming EP, Feeled Notez Vol. 2, is a reflection of my growth and evolution over the past year. I’ve poured my heart and soul into this project, and I can’t wait for my fans to hear it.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
As someone who started out with just a dream and a passion for music, my advice for those just starting out is to believe in yourself and never give up on your dreams. It’s important to work hard, stay focused, and constantly hone your craft. Surround yourself with positive influences and people who support your vision. Don’t be afraid to take risks and try new things, and always be open to learning and growing as an artist. Remember that success doesn’t happen overnight, but with determination and perseverance, you can achieve your goals.
