Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriel Holley.
Hi Gabriel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up as a military kid with interest in band and piano. We constantly moved every few years to new states allowing me to meet new people and experience different parts of America. Music was my main passion and as I got older, I experimented with more and more genres as new ones were introduced to me. Fast forward to college, I attended a music school called AIMM in Atlanta, pursuing a degree in Music/audio production for music and film. I now use my piano skills to score tracks for films and video games as well as provide location audio on film sets such as boom op., mixing, etc. As of right now, I am a freelancer hoping to get that one job that boosts my career to where I dream to be.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely, the moving part was rough. You get to know the people you work and live with, but then have to leave them and start over every four years. Resulting in me missing out in any longterm relationships with friends, family, and even other fellow audio engineers. Now in ATL where I am a new face amongst many trying to stand out as a film score/audio engineer hoping my unique take and background could help set me apart.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am proficient in scoring and creating sound design for film and video games. I love bringing people’s creations to life, creating atmospheres and feeling to their projects. However, I am also proficient in location sound as a boom operator and sound mixer. I am definitely most known as a multi-instrumentalist giving me an edge and a unique take on film scoring. I am most proud of the relationships I have built in the little time I’ve been in this beautiful city and the amount I have grown as a musician, composer, and person since moving here from California.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The biggest for me was to not limit yourself to one skill, genre, or talent. To make it in this industry, you need to set yourself apart from others by being willing to step out of your comfort zone. Whether that is to work on film genre, you’ve never worked on, learning new styles of music or instruments, or learning a new role on the film set. Being skilled at more than one thing only opens up any opportunities you can have
