Hi Karen , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always liked big jewelry pieces since I was a little girl. Always wearing the biggest rings and hanging anything around my neck that could work as a unique necklace. My mom is very spiritual, so I grew up around crystals and quartz and learning about their healing benefits from each type from an early age… My favorite was always clear quartz. In 2015, I started making quartz rings for myself. I learned how to work with wire on my own by practicing and creating jewelry for my collection. I fell in love with how unique and pretty my new rings were, I started posting them on my social media and people started reaching out wanting to buy them. This is how Bohemian Expressions became to be. Today, my jewelry has evolved into more than just rings. My collection includes a variety of necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings and also bohemian accessories like boho bags, home decor including our gorgeous hammocks and pottery.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, even today. Being a small business owner, you wear so many hats. You have the creativity to come up with the designs and products you sell, which to me that is my favorite part of my business. You also have to be good at marketing – which that in itself can be a big struggle for someone who doesn’t have a marketing degree. Social media and algorithms change so often. You have to be a good photographer, you have to create your website, create content. It’s a lot of time and effort that we put into the business, and a lot of people just see it as a hobby, or as something so easy that anyone can do it but it can get really stressful to manage every little aspect of your business.
At the same time, you have to find ways to put your brand out there and make sales be profitable. There have definitely been tears shed throughout this journey, but I wouldn’t want to have it any other way.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The name of my brand is Bohemian Expressions. The name came to be because when I think of my brand and my pieces, I want people to express themselves. The way I wear my jewelry is completely different than how you might wear it, and I love to see people express their fashion style and be their unique selves while feeling confident.
I create handmade jewelry that is unique. I pride myself in sourcing out the best material to offer good quality jewelry and home decor.
I travel to my home country, Mexico, to personally hand-pick pretty quartz and stones to create my pieces. I import artisan handmade hammocks and pottery and work together with local Mexican artists to add my own personal touch to every piece. I love that I can bring a little bit of Mexico to people’s homes.
What matters most to you? Why?
It’s important for me to always be yourself. We live in a world where we are so easily influenced by social media. We are unique in our own way, and that is what makes the world beautiful. Trust is also important to me. I put a lot of effort and take pride into the quality of my work and my product. I want people to feel confident and trust my brand.
