Exploring Life & Business with Janene Marshall of Rooted in Eden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janene Marshall.

Hi Janene, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Rooted in Eden came into fruition after being invited to an all-women’s entrepreneur meeting (I wasn’t nor was I thinking about being an entrepreneur at the time) where they share their lives as an entrepreneur, uplift one another, bounce ideas off of each other, and talk about our aspirations. It was my turn to introduce myself, and after being inspired from everyone’s stories and reflecting on what I was going through (being a pandemic mom of 2 under 2, going through “baby blues”, and experiencing postpartum hair loss on top of that), I threw out there “I think I want to start a natural hair care line”.

I decided to create an all-natural hair care line that aims to educate customers on the importance and benefits of using God-given natural ingredients found within nature to promote healthy hair. Just like trees are nourished from the root to the branches and leaves, every strand of hair is nourished from the roots — hence the name Rooted in Eden.

I wanted to create products that would reverse any hair or scalp conditions experienced by women, men, and children. After researching different cultures and learning about their remedies for combating hair loss and retaining hair length, I found that through the use of essential oils, botanicals, herbs, and natural oils, the scalp is nourished, encouraging healthy hair growth.

I had a lot of support from my family, church family, and friends who purchased my products and spread the word to people they knew. The feedback and testimonials were great, I had multiple people tell me they even used my hair oils on their skin and they saw a major difference in their skin health. This opened the door to me exploring more into ingredients that healed, nourished, and moisturized skin; I found that a lot of the natural oils I used in my hair products also had amazing benefits for the skin, then my “Body Essentials” collection was born.

My approach is not to just sell a product but to educate people going through scalp, hair, or skin issues. Many people do not realize that the hair loss or skin issues that they experience can be caused by situations such as stress, poor diet, the environment, or even lack of rest; this is what Rooted in Eden is all about, getting to the root of the issue, and solving it naturally.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a rollercoaster ride thus far. I’m a full-time stay-at-home mom, so majority of my time is wrapped up in my boys, tending to their needs, my husband’s needs, and the home. I’ve done better with being intentional about having me time and business time by waking up earlier for me time and getting a lot of the business necessities done at their nap time and when they go down for the night.

I also struggle with imposter syndrome at times, feeling like I’m not good enough and comparing myself to businesses that are more ahead than I am. But I have to quickly remind myself that I know without a doubt God called me to do this, and since he has he’ll always give me the tools I need to succeed and open doors that are meant for me; as long as I put him first. Remembering this and my faith in Him is what gets me through.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Just being able to do whatever it was I put my mind to and having my family’s full support. Whether it was being a cheerleader, dancing in the band, playing flag football — and being either captain or co-captain in each of the teams. Being adventurous outside by riding my bike down the steepest hills in the neighborhood, playing in the woods, jumping off of sheds unto a trampoline, just being fearless — I had an amazing childhood.
