Today we’d like to introduce you to Elisheva Pierce.
Hi Elisheva, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, my name is Elisheva and I am an Atlanta-based visionary, painter, and illustrator. Currently, I am working on a project called Arts Barbi, which are paintings that are dedicated to sharing the experiences of women. I started illustrating when I was five years old. My father was a sculptor and my mother was a painter, so I grew up in a very creative home. There would be sessions where my father taught me how to illustrate things in detail without looking at them. I would watch my mother paint her portraits, it was quite inspiring. Illustrating was something I have done throughout my life to help me express my emotions, express the things I go through, and to communicate my experiences. Eventually, I began to transition from solely illustrating to painting, and I began to take art very seriously. I entered shows to display my artworks, where I gained many supporters. Ever since then, I have been living as an artist that communicates and relates with others through art.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It honestly has been a bit bumpy, so, I’d say no. A lot of work and dedication goes into becoming an artist. Consistency is key. There have been many bumps such as pushing to remain consistent through artist’s block, naysayers, and maintaining patience since creating art is a lot of mental work. Also, the Covid pandemic was a huge struggle for myself, and many other artists.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I would like for you to know that I am a very passionate visual artist that specializes in painting and illustrating the emotions and life experiences of women of color. I aspire to paint murals around the city of Atlanta that represents its people and to help bring out the beauty, and culture of our city. I am best known for my paintings such as Echetu and Diabla. I am most proud of my accomplishments to create artwork that emotionally connects with people and helps their confidence. For example, I remember painting a friend of mine, and when she looked at her portrait, she cried because she realized how beautiful she was. I find joy in painting in a way where it is emotionally therapeutic for people because I believe that art is therapy and art is life.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is the thought of complete freedom and innovation. I love to discover new ideas, concepts, and atmospheres! Also, the freedom to be true to your authentic self is such a liberating, and joyful thing that brings true happiness.
