Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Smith.
Hi Monique, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have become a full-time content creator over the last few years. My journey in the fashion industry started back in 2012 when I began to create fashion content on various social media platforms. My decision to pursue a career in the fashion industry was not the most conventional, and it was not initially supported by my family. Despite their apprehensions, I was determined to pursue my dream. I completely changed my mindset during this process and believed I could achieve anything I put my mind too. When Covid happened and I lost my job, I knew it was time. I decided it was now or never and to go for it! Three long years later, I have become full time and it has been such an amazing journey. I truly learned so much about myself and started to grow into the person I am today.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I think a lot of times, social media can be very glamorized. Most of the time, people only showcase their highlights and best moments of life. I quickly learned how many internal struggles you can go through, whether that is depression, anxiety and not feeling good enough. The followers and numbers can get inside your head but you have to remember what your true purpose is. You are so unique and such an addition to the community, never compare your journey to anyone else’s. I was able to get through these tough times by having a close circle of friends and family supporting me along the way. I was also able to build my own community of like-minded individuals all over the world that I can go to for advice and suggestions.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
One thing I love about being a creative is how many different titles you can have! I originally specialized in content creation and video editing. I began to build an audience around my viral How To & Video Editing Tutorials on Instagram and Tiktok. Along the way, I discovered my passion for inspiring and uplifting others, leading me to create motivational videos detailing my creative journey. I was able to connect with my audience on a deeper level. These videos opened up numerous opportunities, such as appearances on podcasts, panels, and an interview with ET Canada. As a black creator, I have encountered obstacles in securing brand partnerships and gaining recognition within the industry. I strive to unite our community and create a supportive space for emerging creatives to feel included and empowered. One of my goals is to bring our community together and have a solid foundation for up-and-coming creatives. I want us to have somewhere where we feel accepted and belong.
I recently hosted my first Black History Month Celebration: Fashion for the Culture. This event was created to recognize and celebrate the remarkable contributions and achievements of Black influencers and creatives in Toronto, Canada.
I have always felt that our community was missing an important element. I have long dreamed of bringing together like-minded individuals to connect, collaborate, and drive progress in our industry. Thanks to our partnership with Toronto Metropolitan University and TMU Fashion Zone, we were able to bring this incredible experience to life. It was a true honor to be a part of this event and we are grateful to everyone who contributed to its success. I look forward to hosting more events that bring together our community and drive positive change in our industry.
What makes you happy?
When I started this career, I spent a lot of time thinking about my purpose and where God is taking me. This journey has led me to so many blessings and opportunities to inspire and mentor others. Nothing makes me happier than being able to fulfill my purpose and lead others into their true passion. I hope to continue to do what I love and help guide others to discover their true calling.
