Life & Work with Matthew Goodman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Goodman.

Hi Matthew, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Well, as I sit here and just gather my thoughts I realized my story has a few blank pages that I have yet to fill in. My life story is very unconventional, very different from most, but I guess that is why it’s called my life story. I was born in a small city in the Midwest called Tulsa Oklahoma. I was adopted by two loving parents that have been the backbone and heartbeat of my existence. I couldn’t have asked for better parents and I believe that is why God himself sent them to me. I remember so vividly my childhood that it sometimes scares me. I remember the school that I went to, the church I attended and all of the things that inherently make me who I am today. It was the church that introduced me to all of the things that I currently pursue till this day. When I was seven years old, my family and I moved to Columbia, SC where I ultimately grew up.

I was in the band, I played sports and started to explore more of the arts all the way up until I graduated Ridge View High School. After high school, I received an academic scholarship by way of the John Hopps Scholar program at Morehouse College. I didn’t realize it then, but attending Morehouse College would change my life forever. While I was attending Morehouse College, I was blessed to be in America’s 1st ever African American reality television series, “College Hill: Atlanta” on BET network. That’s when things started to really change. I got even more serious about my crafts and my career, but more importantly what I wanted to share and gift to the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not been smooth, and I never really expected it to be in a weird way. The biggest struggle that comes to mind is I lost my faith and in turn, lost my way. My confidence was gone, I started to 2nd guess myself, and I looked for various things and substances to escape it all. I didn’t want to take responsibility for the decisions I made as well as the outcomes, I found it much easier to put the blame on other people…but the revolving door always seems to find its way back around.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an artist. That’s what I do. I create art. More recently, I’ve been trying my hand in acting and that’s going pretty well. I’ve been blessed to have been given some opportunities to express myself in ways that I haven’t. I’m looking forward to exploring it a bit further if it’s God’s Will. I also enjoy working behind the scenes on various television and film productions. Over the years, I have learned a lot about television and film especially the business side of things which I believe is the most important part. I consider myself a businessman first so I’m always looking forward to new opportunities to learn. What I am most proud of is my daughter, Kennedy. There is no accomplishment better than being a Father.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love best about the city are the people. There are so many different types of people here; it’s a true melting pot of all cultures and ethnicities. Not to mention the food! From the hoods of the inner and outer cities of Atlanta to your 5-star restaurants. It’s ALL here. Every day is an exquisite adventure. What I like least about the city quite naturally is the inflation. Housing, food, and entertainment used to be a lot more affordable here. That would make more people want to be out and enjoy themselves. Everything is about a quick dollar and not the experience as it used to be. Once we are able to implement things to corner those issues in our community, Atlanta will continue to excel.
