Rising Stars: Meet Lizzy McAvoy-Bass

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lizzy McAvoy-Bass.

Hi Lizzy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a songwriter, singer and record producer turned film producer. I fell in love with performing as young as four years old and started writing my first songs at the age of 11. I graduated high school early so I would be able to pursue my dream of music in Nashville, Tennessee, leaving my hometown of Columbus, Ohio, at the age of 16. I signed my first publishing deal just a few days after my 18th birthday and spent the next 13 years writing songs, performing, and recording in the studio. I became a multi-instrumentalist, engineer, and producer, producing three records for myself and close to 20 singles for other artists. I wrote over 400 songs and accumulated close to 30 outside releases. My songs were featured in major motion pictures and TV commercials. Songs I had written were certified gold, platinum and were CCMA nominated. I was signed to one of the largest publishing companies in the world, Universal Music Publishing Group. I lived almost every dream I had dreamt back in my hometown has (as) a young girl. When 2020 came around, the music industry, like most, came to halt and money got tight. In an attempt to make some additional income, I accidentally found myself in a new creative medium, the film industry. From 2021 to present, I have had the opportunity to work on TV Shows and Movies for Apple TV+, FOX, USA Network and Paramount. I’ve been a part of producing major label music videos and associate producer credit on network television. I never imagined I would find myself in another career and working on incredible shows. When I am off-set, I continue to create music and write for select projects. I currently live in Nashville, TN with my husband Brad, Goldendoodle Jarvis, Guinea pig Biscotti, and box turtle Sheldon.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Neither my career nor life has been a smooth road. I have faced a lot of obstacles. Whether it was being a young songwriter, wanting to be taken seriously as a mature writer and singer. Or being a female engineer and producer in a predominantly male industry. I felt my career had a lot of “almosts”. I almost landed that big single, I almost wrote with that one artist, and I almost had a song go to the radio. But all of those almosts lead me to where I am. I spent a lot of my career living and dwelling in those almosts. Now as a 32-year-old, I can look back and see that I worked very hard and built an incredible career. I lived a life most people only dream of, and that makes me incredibly grateful and fortunate. My record “Diary of a 20 Something” encapsulated a lot of those struggles. Trying to make it, figuring out how to get to “the top”. I was a “full-time dreamer, living part-time broke”. My transition from music into film was also a bumpy road. I felt this urge to pursue film after I was bit by the bug, but part of me felt like I was failing myself by not continuing to pursue music 100% of the time. My heart loved the world behind the lens and the world behind the guitar – I just needed to figure out how to marry those two worlds together. That transition period in my life was a huge struggle but I’m so glad I pushed myself to be brave and challenge myself.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In music, I specialize in songwriting first and foremost. I love meeting artists, learning their stories and turning those stories into songs. My genres include singer/songwriter, country and pop. My next specialty is production. I either build the tracks from top to bottom on my own or I produce full band projects in the studio.

In the (delete the) film, I am a production coordinator/manager, associate producer and producer. I am efficient, organized, and great with budgets. I bring a positive attitude and solid work ethic.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Myself is what matters most to me. I know that sounds absolutely selfish and self-centered, but I promise I have a good explanation. Myself matters most to me because if I don’t care for myself, love myself, and encourage myself, I can’t be there for what truly matters the most to me – my husband, my fur babies, my friends, my family, and my career. I have spent the past couple of years working on my health and well-being, and through that journey, I have learned that putting everything else in the world before oneself will only end up draining you and stealing your happiness. When I put myself first, I am able to be the best version of myself. I can be a great wife, friend, and co-worker. I can dedicate my time to volunteering and being an active participant in my community.
